Priya's Thursday, Two Ways

9 lessons · 24 prompts

A day in the life of a 3D Artist: what changes with these prompts.

Priya, a 3D artist at a small game studio, is building market props for a village scene.

Priya opens a brief for a market stall that needs to feel lived in. The notes are scattered across email, a mood board, and a sticky note. She opens ChatGPT and uses the Reference & Concept Planning prompt to turn it all into a reference list, an asset list, and three concept directions. She pastes in the words "weathered wood, hanging fabric, clay pots" and gets a clear starting point.

Next, she hits a bevel that keeps pinching on the stall roof. She uses the Modeling Workflow Help prompt in Claude to ask for a step-by-step fix and a small script to rename her parts. The script saves her from clicking through forty objects. She tests it on a copy first, just like the lesson says.

After lunch, the art director sends a long message about the fabric texture and the render looking flat. Priya uses the Texture & Shader Development prompt to turn a photo of burlap into material notes for her shader graph. Then she uses the Feedback & Client Communication prompt in Gemini to sort the notes into a revision plan. She sends back a short list: what she will change, what she needs, and when it will be ready.

By four o'clock, the stall is modeled, textured, and ready for lighting tomorrow. Priya shuts her laptop and takes her dog, Biscuit, to the park before sunset. The prompts did not make the art for her, but they cleared the fog so she could finish on time.

Before

  • Briefs live in five different apps.
  • Rework eats the whole afternoon.
  • Feedback notes feel like a puzzle.
  • Export surprises at the deadline.

After this course

  • One clear asset list before modeling.
  • Bevel fix found in minutes.
  • Client notes become a checklist.
  • Exports pass the first time.

What you'll learn

  • Reference Planning: Turn a brief or vague idea into a reference list, asset list, and concept prompts before you model.
  • Modeling Workflow: Get step-by-step modeling plans, troubleshoot mesh errors, and generate small scripts for repetitive work.
  • Texture and Shader: Understand shader graphs, design procedural textures, and turn photo references into material notes.
  • Rigging and Animation: Plan rig hierarchies, debug deformation problems, and get timing suggestions before you keyframe.
  • Lighting and Rendering: Build lighting checklists, diagnose render errors, and estimate render settings to hit your deadline.
  • Optimization and Export: Audit meshes for performance, prepare engine export settings, and troubleshoot assets after import.
  • Feedback and Communication: Turn messy feedback into a clear revision plan and explain technical trade-offs to clients or art directors.
  • Pipeline Admin: Set up naming standards and document pipeline steps so your team can find and hand off assets.
