A day in the life of an Author: what changes with these prompts.

Daniel, a nonfiction author writing his second book on urban gardening.

Daniel starts his day with a blank page. He needs a new angle for a chapter on rooftop gardens. He opens ChatGPT and types: "I'm writing a chapter on rooftop gardening for beginners. Give me five surprising benefits and three common mistakes, with a one-sentence explanation for each."

Then he uses Claude to outline the chapter. He pastes his notes and asks: "Turn these notes into a chapter outline with a hook, three main points, and a practical takeaway." He gets a structure he can work with.

Later, he needs to check a fact about soil depth. He asks Gemini: "What is the minimum soil depth for growing tomatoes on a rooftop? Give me a short answer and a source I can check." He verifies the source and adds it to his draft.

After lunch, his editor sends feedback on a previous chapter. He uses ChatGPT to translate the notes: "My editor says the chapter feels slow in the middle. Give me three ways to tighten it without losing the personal story." He rewrites the section. With the hours saved, he takes a walk to the community garden and reads a novel for pleasure.

Before

  • Staring at a blank page for an hour.
  • Outline feels like a puzzle with missing pieces.
  • Research pulls me away from writing.
  • Editor notes feel vague and overwhelming.

After this course

  • A clear angle in ten minutes.
  • An outline that actually flows.
  • Research that supports my voice.
  • Revisions I can finish before dinner.

What you'll learn

  • Brainstorm Story Ideas: Generate and pressure-test book premises, angles, and genre hooks before you commit to a full draft.
  • Outline Chapters and Plot: Turn a premise into a workable chapter outline, story beats, and pacing plan.
  • Research Subject Matter: Gather, summarize, and verify background material for fiction or nonfiction without losing your own angle.
  • Develop Character Arcs: Create and track characters whose desires, flaws, and changes stay coherent across the manuscript.
  • Draft Manuscript Sections: Produce fresh scene, chapter, and dialogue drafts from your notes while keeping your voice in control.
  • Revise With Feedback: Translate editor, beta reader, or agent feedback into concrete revision choices and rewritten pages.
  • Edit For Consistency: Catch voice slips, continuity errors, and repeated problems before a professional edit or submission.
  • Query Literary Agents: Draft and refine query letters, synopses, and agent research so submissions are targeted and professional.
