What is data science?
How data powers recommendations, fraud detection and forecasts, and what data science is.
- Recommendations, fraud detection and weather forecasts all run on data.
- Data science turns data into predictions and decisions.
- Billions of data points are created every day.

What does data science do?
Turns data into predictions and decisions.
Give an example.
Bank fraud detection.
0:18 Have you ever wondered how companies know which product you're most likely to buy? Or how banks detect fraudulent transactions within seconds? Or how weather apps can predict tomorrow's forecast? The answer isn't guesswork. It's data. Every day, billions of pieces of data are created through online shopping, social media, banking, healthcare, and countless other activities. But raw data by itself isn't useful. Its real value comes from analyzing it, finding patterns, and using those patterns to make better decisions.
0:42 And that's exactly what data science is. Data science is a process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to solve problems, make predictions, and help business make smarter decisions. Today, data science is one of the fastest growing fields in the world. It's used across industries like healthcare, finance, e-commerce, sports, manufacturing, and entertainment to solve real world problems and drive innovations. In this data science full course by Intellipad, we'll start from the fundamentals and gradually build up to the advanced concepts.
1:05 You will learn the complete data science workflow. Understand essential tools and techniques. Work with real data sets and build practical projects that give you hands-on experience. Whether you're complete beginner, a student, or a working professional looking to start a career in data science, this course is designed to help you build a strong foundation. So without any further ado, let's get started. Are you someone who dreams of becoming a data scientist? Keep watching because today we are going to show you how data science works in the real world.
1:29 Meet Alex. He's a data scientist. Let's take a quick look at what his day looks like as he works on a supply chain optimization project. The first step in solving any problem is understanding the problem itself. And for this, Alex gets in a meeting with the operation team. He asks question, dig deeper and figure out what exactly need to be solved. He create actionable questions such as is the goal to reduce cost, improve delivery time or manage inventory better.
1:53 He also checks if there are any current issue with the system. Once the business goal is clear, Alex moves to the next step which is data acquisition. This means collecting the right data for machine to learn from and make smart suggestions. Think of it like cooking. Just as you need the right ingredient for cooking, similarly you need the right data for a data science project and this the process of gathering useful information from different sources is called data acquisition.
2:37 Alex collects data from inventory system, order management platform, warehouse logs and third party suppliers APIs and yes finding the right data takes time, patience and attention to detail. So once the data is collected, Alex moves to the next step which is data preparation. Raw data in its natural form is very messy and unstructured. You can't jump into analysis or modeling until the data is structured. And once it is structured, the job is still not done. We still need to clean it, transform it, and organize it.
3:00 Alex here needs to check the empty row, duplicate entries, missing delivery timestamps and ensure that there are no inconsistency in the data set. This step is often the most time consuming part of the entire process. Why? Because here you are making sure that you have the right information needed to solve the actual business problem. So once the data is clean and structured, Alex moves on to exploratory data analysis or EDA. A very critical step where he identifies the feature that really matter.
3:23 But why is this important? So let's say you're trying to predict delivery time. What features like product cost, payment mode or ID help. Those are basically the order details. They have no influence on the delivery time. So keeping them in our data science process doesn't make any sense. If we include them, we might weaken the model or introduce unnecessary noise. Think of it like cooking for one person. You don't grab everything from the fridge, just the exact ingredients you need.
3:46 That way you don't overcook or waste time. EDA helps you do the same in a data science project. Focus only on relevant features so that your model is efficient, accurate and purpose-built. Next come the step five where the a data science model will be prepared. Alex already have a clean data at hand. Now he trains this acquired data with machine learning algorithm that fit best to the business problem. He can apply model like random forest, K means clustering and linear regression.
4:08 He train these model and evaluate their performance. To do that, he use metrics like accuracy score or confusion metrics. These metrics help Alex understand how well models are able to perform on test data after they are trained. Alex usually prefer Python for this though he also uses R or SQL depending on the requirement. Now you might think that we have accurate model that means the job is done. Well, not true. Alex now needs to present his finding to business stakeholders again.
4:56 Alex meets with the business team again to communicate his finding in a clear straightforward way. He uses tools like Tableau, PowerBI and Excel to create visual reports and dashboard which are self-explanatory and easy to understand for business leader. Once Alex gets the approval, he then moves to the next step which is deploying the model. Once it is deployed, Alex monitors realtime matrix using dashboard and continues fine-tuning the model's performance. And this is how Alex completes a data science project.
5:19 Every data science project generally start from business problem, data acquisition and then come stages such as data preparation, EDA, modeling, reporting and end with deployment. With Alex journey now we have a clear picture of entire data science project life cycle. So let's move forward and look at how data science is transforming industry today. In retail, it helps forecast demand and prevent stockouts during peak sale periods. ill logistic. It finds the most efficient delivery routes and reduces fuel uses.
5:41 In HR, it helps predict employee turnover and improve team retention. In healthcare, it accelerate diagnosis and powers personalized treatment. A data scientist can take on many role. You can become a business analyst, machine learning engineer, data engineer, or a specialized supply chain data scientist. In 2025, the average salary ranges from $100,000 to $170,000 depending on your skills and industry. Whereas in India, they earn between 7 lakh rupees to 18 lakh rupees as per glass door. So are you ready to begin your journey as a data scientist?
