Why three slots beat a bare request
This lesson explains what a prompt framework is and why RTF, three simple slots, beats a bare request.
- A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
- The AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need.
- Frameworks make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues.
- They are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation, and a quick simple question can stay short.
- There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples.
- RTF is a fill-in-the-slots framework. Each letter stands for one part of your prompt: Role, Task, Format. It is the fastest structured framework, written in under thirty seconds, which is why it is the default when in doubt.
| Bare request | RTF prompt |
|---|---|
| Write an email about the delay | Role: experienced project manager |
| AI guesses the tone | Task: tell the client the delivery is late |
| AI guesses the reader | Format: subject line, three short paragraphs |
| Generic answer, needs rewriting | Usable answer in under thirty seconds |

What is a prompt framework?
A reusable structure or checklist for the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym.
What are the three slots in RTF?
Role, Task, Format.
Why is RTF the default when you are in doubt?
It is the fastest structured framework, written in under thirty seconds, and it closes the three gaps that cause generic answers.
Wes Welcome to RTF Prompt Framework: Role, Task, Format. This course is part of Complete AI Training; you'll find the full library at complete A I training dot com. It takes six short chapters.
Laura This part is the starting point. We explain what a prompt framework is, then show you RTF, three slots that turn a vague request into a clear one.
Wes A prompt is simply the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. Think of it as a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
Laura Why bother with a structure at all. Because the AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that actually change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve, and the format you need back.
Wes Frameworks also make your prompts repeatable. You fill in the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template, and share it with colleagues. They are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part.
Laura They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation. A quick, simple question can stay short. There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples.
Wes This course covers RTF. It is a fill-in-the-slots framework, an acronym where each letter stands for one part of your prompt. R is Role, T is Task, F is Format. Three slots, and you are done.
Laura Now the problem RTF solves. A bare request like write an email about the delay leaves the model guessing who it is, who reads it, and what shape you want. So it guesses all three, and you get something generic.
Wes RTF fills exactly those three gaps. Here is the same job done properly. A project manager needs to tell a client a delivery is late. Watch how the three slots remove every guess.
Laura Notice what changed. The role set the tone, the task gave one clear job and the reason, and the format fixed the shape. RTF is the fastest structured framework, written in under thirty seconds. That is why it is the default when you are in doubt.
Wes So remember the main point. Three slots beat a bare request, because they close the gaps that cause generic answers. When you are unsure how to start, write RTF first. It takes half a minute and it changes the whole reply.
Laura Your turn. Take a real request you would normally type in one line at work. Rewrite it with a Role, a Task and a Format, then compare the two answers.
