Darnell, a diesel and gas mechanic at a busy independent shop.

Darnell starts his Thursday with a 2014 Subaru Outback that came in with a check engine light and a rough idle. The code is P0301, a misfire on cylinder 1. He opens ChatGPT and types the code, the symptoms, and the mileage. He asks for a test plan and a ranked list of likely causes. The AI suggests checking the ignition coil, spark plugs, and fuel injector, in that order. Darnell grabs his tools and starts with the coil.

By mid-morning, he has found a weak ignition coil. The customer, Mrs. Chen, is waiting in the lobby. Darnell uses Claude to turn his findings into a friendly explanation. He types: 'Explain a misfire on cylinder 1 from a bad ignition coil to a customer. Keep it simple and reassuring.' The AI gives him a short paragraph about how the coil sends spark to the engine, and how replacing it will smooth out the idle. Mrs. Chen nods and says, 'That makes sense, thank you.'

Next, Darnell writes an estimate. He opens Gemini and asks for a quote for replacing one ignition coil and four spark plugs on a 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5L. He includes labor time from his shop's guide. The AI drafts line items: parts, labor, shop supplies, and tax. Darnell adjusts the prices and adds a note about the recommended spark plug replacement. He sends it to Mrs. Chen for approval.

While waiting, he researches parts. He asks ChatGPT to find the OEM part number for the ignition coil and compare it with two aftermarket options. It lists the numbers, prices, and notes about warranty. Darnell orders the OEM coil and the spark plugs from his usual supplier. He finishes the job by 3:30 instead of 5:30. He uses the extra time to pick up his daughter from soccer practice and stop for ice cream on the way home.
