Action, Purpose, Expectation
This lesson explains what a prompt framework is and introduces APE: Action, Purpose, Expectation, with the Purpose slot as the part that changes the quality of the answer.
- A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request, usually a short acronym that names the parts a good prompt contains.
- Frameworks help because the AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. Including who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need reduces those guesses and makes the answer more useful.
- Frameworks make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues, so the quality does not depend on who typed it.
- Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation, while a quick, simple question can stay short.
- There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. APE is a fill-in-the-slots framework where each letter is one part of your prompt.
- APE stands for Action (what to do), Purpose (why) and Expectation (what you want back). Its power is the Purpose slot, because the model optimises for the outcome you name, not the one you meant.
| Slot | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action | What to do | Find a shortlist of venues |
| Purpose | Why you want it | So the team can plan next quarter |
| Expectation | What you want back | Five options with price and capacity |
Do this in your own tools, step by step. Ticks are saved on this device.
What is a prompt framework?
A reusable structure or checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym.
What do the letters in APE stand for?
Action, Purpose, Expectation.
Which slot does the most work in APE, and why?
Purpose, because the model optimises for the outcome you name, not the one you meant.
Adam Welcome to APE Prompt Framework: Action, Purpose, Expectation. This course is part of Complete AI Training; you'll find the full library at complete A I training dot com. It takes six short chapters.
Paula This part introduces prompt frameworks and then APE: Action, Purpose, Expectation. You will see why the Purpose slot does the heavy lifting, and how a simple three part prompt changes the answer you get back.
Adam A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. Think of it as a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
Paula Why does that help? The AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need back.
Adam Frameworks also make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template, and share it with colleagues. They are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part.
Paula Use them when a request is complex or open to interpretation. A quick, simple question can stay short. There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples.
Adam This course sits on one of those frameworks. APE is a fill-in-the-slots framework, an acronym where each letter stands for one part of your prompt. A is Action, what to do. P is Purpose, why. E is Expectation, what you want back.
Paula Here is the part that surprises people. The power of APE is the Purpose slot. The model optimises for the outcome you name, not the one you meant. If you say why you want something, the AI can choose better options, drop weak ones and shape the answer around your goal.
Adam Watch it in a real job. An office assistant needs a venue shortlist. The prompt names the action, the purpose and the expectation. Notice how the reply comes back already shaped around the goal, not a generic list of conference centres.
Paula APE is one of the easiest frameworks for beginners, together with TAG. It is short, three slots, and you can fill it in under a minute. The main mistake is skipping the Purpose slot and typing only the action, which leaves the AI guessing at your goal.
Adam So remember this. APE is Action, Purpose, Expectation, and the Purpose slot is where the quality comes from. Name the outcome you want, and the AI optimises for that outcome instead of the one you meant.
Paula Your turn. Take one task from your own job this week. Write an APE prompt for it with a clear Action, a real Purpose and a specific Expectation. Run it in your AI tool and compare the answer to what you would have got from a one line request.
