Where CRISPE comes from
This lesson explains what a prompt framework is, where CRISPE came from and what its five letters stand for.
- A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request, a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
- Frameworks help because the AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. Including who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need changes the answer far more than adding polite wording.
- Frameworks make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues, so the same request gives similar results whoever runs it.
- Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation, while a quick, simple question can stay short.
- There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. CRISPE was created by Matt Nigh and published as a GitHub README on 7 February 2023, one of the first prompt frameworks.
- The letters of CRISPE stand for Capacity and Role, Insight, Statement, Personality and Experiment. Many websites expand the letters differently, so this course uses the original wording throughout.
| Letter | Stands for | What you write |
|---|---|---|
| C | Capacity and Role | Who the AI should act as |
| R | Insight | Background and context |
| I | Statement | The task itself |
| S | Personality | Tone and style |
| P | Experiment | Ask for options or variants |

Adam Welcome to CRISPE Prompt Framework: Explore Options and Variants. This course is part of Complete AI Training; you'll find the full library at complete A I training dot com. It takes six short chapters.
Paula This part explains what a prompt framework is, then where CRISPE came from and what its five letters stand for, so every later part has a clear starting point.
Adam A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. Think of it as a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
Paula Why bother with a checklist. The AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that actually change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need back.
Adam Frameworks also make your prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues. The same request then gives similar results whoever runs it.
Paula One caution. Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation. A quick, simple question can stay short.
Adam There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. CRISPE is one of the earliest, and it is a fill in the slots framework, where each letter stands for one part of your prompt.
Paula CRISPE was created by Matt Nigh and published as a GitHub README on 7 February 2023. It was one of the first prompt frameworks. The letters stand for Capacity and Role, Insight, Statement, Personality and Experiment. Many websites expand the letters differently. This course uses the original.
Adam Here is the shape of it. Capacity and Role sets who the AI should be. Insight gives background. Statement is the task itself. Personality sets the tone. Experiment asks for options. Five slots, filled in order.
Paula Now the same idea in a real tool. A brand strategist needs taglines for a new product. The prompt fills all five slots, and the answer comes back as options with reasons, not one flat guess.
Adam The main takeaway. CRISPE is a fill in the slots framework from Matt Nigh, published in February 2023. Five letters, five parts of your prompt. Learn the original here, and you can read any other version without confusion.
Paula Your turn. Pick one real request from your own job this week. Write it once as a plain sentence, then rewrite it with all five CRISPE slots filled in.
