The template idea
This lesson explains what a prompt framework is and introduces ICIO as a fill-in-the-slots structure where Instruction and Context stay fixed while Input and Output change each run.
- A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request, a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
- Frameworks help because the AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. Naming the parts that change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need, keeps the answer close to what you actually wanted.
- Frameworks make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues, so the same task produces the same quality whoever runs it.
- Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation, while a quick, simple question can stay short.
- There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. Learning the ingredients matters more than memorising the labels.
- ICIO is a fill-in-the-slots framework: Instruction, Context, Input, Output. Instruction and Context stay fixed, Input and Output change every run. The four-part idea comes from DAIR.AI's Prompt Engineering Guide from February 2023, and sources still disagree on the letters.
| Part of ICIO | What it holds | Does it change? |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction | The task you want done | Fixed |
| Context | Background, rules and audience | Fixed |
| Input | The new material for this run | Changes |
| Output | The format you want back | Changes |

What is a prompt framework?
A reusable structure, a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym.
In ICIO, which two parts stay fixed?
Instruction and Context.
Which two parts change every run?
Input and Output.
Paula Welcome to ICIO and CIDI: Reusable Prompt Templates. This course is part of Complete AI Training; you'll find the full library at complete A I training dot com. It takes six short chapters.
Abby This part covers the template idea behind ICIO: what a prompt framework is, why structure beats guesswork, and how one reusable prompt can serve you and your colleagues every day.
Paula A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. Think of it as a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
Abby Why bother with a checklist. Because the AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that actually change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve, and the format you need back.
Paula Frameworks also make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template, and share it with colleagues. Same structure, same quality, no matter who runs it. That is the whole point of this course.
Abby One caution. Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation. A quick, simple question can stay short and plain.
Paula There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. Different names, same building blocks. So learn the blocks, not just the labels.
Abby Now this course. ICIO is a fill-in-the-slots framework. Each letter stands for one part of your prompt. I for Instruction, C for Context, I for Input, O for Output. Instruction and Context stay fixed. Input and Output change every run.
Paula The four-part idea comes from DAIR.AI's Prompt Engineering Guide, published in February 2023. The acronym spread later, and sources still disagree on the letters. So do not worry about arguing over names. Focus on the slots and what you write in them.
Abby Here is the worked example. An operations analyst classifies incoming emails. The Instruction and Context are written once. Each morning the analyst pastes a new email into Input and gets the same table back. Same template, new email, seconds of work.
Paula So the takeaway for this part. A prompt framework is a checklist, not a spell. ICIO gives you four slots, two fixed and two changing. Fill them with real detail from your job, save the result, and you have a template you can reuse and share.
Abby Your turn. Pick one task you repeat at work, such as summarising updates or sorting requests. Write the four ICIO slots for it in a blank document, then run it once in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
