What RACE adds
This lesson explains what a prompt framework is and introduces RACE: Role, Action, Context, Expectation, with the Expectation slot as its main strength.
- A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. It can be one sentence or several paragraphs.
- A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. It is a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
- The AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need.
- Frameworks make prompts repeatable: you fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues.
- Frameworks are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. They help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation, while a quick, simple question can stay short.
- There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. RACE is one of the most used for professional everyday work.

What is a prompt framework?
A reusable structure or checklist for the request you type into an AI tool, usually named with an acronym.
What does RACE stand for in prompt writing?
Role, Action, Context, Expectation.
Which slot is RACE's main strength?
Expectation, because you tell the model what a good answer contains before it starts.
Wes Welcome to RACE Prompt Framework: Role, Action, Context, Expectation. This course is part of Complete AI Training; you'll find the full library at complete A I training dot com. It takes six short chapters.
Laura This part explains what a prompt framework is, then introduces RACE: Role, Action, Context, Expectation. You will see why the Expectation slot changes the answer, and how to use RACE in your own work.
Wes A prompt is the request you type into an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A prompt framework is a reusable structure for that request. It is a short checklist of the parts a good prompt contains, usually named with an acronym so it is easy to remember.
Laura Why does a framework help? The AI fills in whatever you leave out with generic guesses. A framework makes sure you include the parts that change the answer, such as who it is for, what you want to achieve and the format you need.
Wes Frameworks also make prompts repeatable. You fill the same parts each time, save the prompt as a template and share it with colleagues. That means a good prompt becomes a team asset instead of a one-off message.
Laura They are not magic words. The value comes from the detail you put in each part. Frameworks help most when a request is complex or open to interpretation. A quick, simple question can stay short.
Wes There are well over sixty named frameworks, and most of them remix the same ingredients: role, task, context, audience, format, constraints and examples. RACE is one of the most used for professional everyday work.
Laura RACE is a fill-in-the-slots framework. Each letter stands for one part of your prompt. Role tells the AI who to be. Action tells it what to do. Context gives the material and limits. Expectation tells it what a good answer contains before it starts.
Wes The strength of RACE is the Expectation slot. You tell the model what a good answer contains before it starts. That is different from asking for a better answer afterwards. It sets the shape of the reply up front.
Laura Here is that prompt in a chat window. Notice how the analyst states the role, the action, the context and the expectation in one message. The AI replies with a structured comparison instead of a vague summary.
Wes One warning about the name. In marketing, RACE also means Reach, Act, Convert, Engage. That is a different framework and it is unrelated to prompts. If a colleague mentions RACE, check which one they mean.
Laura RACE adds one thing most simple prompts miss: the Expectation slot. You say what a good answer contains before the model starts writing. Use it for complex requests, save your best prompts as templates, and remember the name clash with marketing.
Wes Your turn. Think of one complex request you have in your own job this week. Write a RACE prompt for it, filling all four slots. Then run it and note what the Expectation slot changed.
