Omar, an analytical chemist at a water testing lab.

Omar starts Thursday with a titration run planned for 9:00. Before he weighs anything, he opens ChatGPT and uses the Solutions and Calculations prompt: 'Check my dilution math for 250 mL of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide from a 1.0 M stock. Show steps and flag unit issues.' He catches a conversion slip and fixes the label before the lab fills up.

Next he uses Experiment Planning and Protocols in Claude. He asks for a small protocol comparing two filtering methods for turbidity samples, including a blank and a duplicate. The outline is not perfect, but it gives him a clean start. He edits it, adds his lab's sample IDs, and sends the material list to the stockroom.

After the first batch, he turns to Safety and Compliance. He asks Gemini to draft a safety summary for sodium hydroxide pellets and to pull key handling points from the safety data sheet into plain language. Then he uses Data and Results to summarize the turbidity readings, check the standard deviation, and explain one odd value from sample B-7. He checks every number against his notebook before he trusts it.

By mid afternoon, Omar has the protocol, safety notes, and data summary ready for his supervisor. He uses the time he would have spent retyping notes to walk a new technician through the titration setup and to leave on time for his daughter's soccer practice. AI did not do the chemistry. It helped him clear the paperwork around it.

Before

  • Math checked twice on scratch paper
  • Protocols rebuilt from old notes
  • Safety forms wait until late afternoon
  • Data summaries stretch into the next day

After this course

  • Math checked before lab coat
  • Protocols start from a clear outline
  • Safety notes drafted in one sitting
  • Data summaries ready before handoff

What you'll learn

  • Solutions and math: Get help with solution preparation math, unit conversions, and stoichiometry checks before you step into the lab.
  • Experiment planning: Turn an experiment idea into a clear protocol, controls, and a material estimate with AI as a planning partner.
  • Safety and compliance: Draft safety summaries, pull key points from safety data sheets, and plan compliant waste disposal with AI assistance.
  • Data and results: Make sense of experimental data by summarizing results, checking statistics, and interpreting odd findings.
  • Literature review: Use AI to quickly digest papers, compare methods, and spot research gaps for your next experiment.
  • Documentation: Convert rough notes into structured documentation and explain your chemistry to non-specialists.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose failed reactions or equipment issues and plan systematic optimization with AI's help.
  • Advanced compounds: Use AI to brainstorm synthetic routes, summarize structure-activity relationships, and outline scale-up plans.
