Priya's Wednesday, Two Ways

9 lessons · 24 prompts

A day in the life of a Medical Coder: what changes with these prompts.

Priya, an outpatient medical coder at a busy clinic.

Priya starts Wednesday with three charts flagged for review. One cardiology note is a scanned handwritten page, one skin excision note does not say which side, and one claim came back denied for a missing modifier. She opens ChatGPT and uses the Clinical Chart Review prompt to turn the cardiology note into a list of codable diagnoses, procedures, and missing details.

Next she opens Claude and uses the CPT and HCPCS Support prompt. She pastes the knee arthroscopy note, asks for CPT candidate descriptions side by side, and checks where a modifier may be needed. The comparison helps her see the right path without guessing.

For the skin excision, she uses Gemini and the Physician Queries prompt. She drafts a short query asking the doctor to confirm laterality and whether the lesion was malignant, then edits it to match the clinic's tone. Later, she uses the Denials and Biller Communication prompt in ChatGPT to explain the lab panel denial and draft an appeal with the coding evidence attached.

By late afternoon, Priya has cleared the queue that usually follows her home. She logs off on time, picks up her daughter from soccer, and walks the long way back. The time won back goes to her family and to a short coding update she actually enjoys reading.

Before

  • Charts pile up with missing details
  • Queries wait until late afternoon
  • Denials feel like extra homework
  • Updates get pushed to the weekend

After this course

  • Charts triaged before the first coffee
  • Queries go out while details are fresh
  • Denials answered with clear evidence
  • Updates studied during work hours

What you'll learn

  • Chart Review: Turn a messy clinical note into a clear list of diagnoses, procedures, and missing details.
  • ICD-10-CM Help: Find and check ICD-10-CM code candidates while still using your official coding resources.
  • CPT And HCPCS: Pull procedure details into CPT and HCPCS candidates and spot modifier needs.
  • Physician Queries: Draft clear, compliant queries when the documentation is unclear.
  • Compliance Checks: Review coded claims for risk and prepare simple audit summaries.
  • Denials And Handoffs: Explain denial reasons and hand off claims to billers with coding evidence.
  • Coding Updates: Study coding changes and build a personal learning plan for new codes.
  • Safe AI Use: Check AI suggestions and create safe habits for private coding work.
