ADP and AWS expand partnership to build AI agents for payroll and HR tasks

ADP has named Amazon Web Services its strategic cloud provider in an expanded partnership that will accelerate generative and agentic AI capabilities across ADP's human capital management platform. The deal, announced September 8, 2026, gives ADP's 1.1 million clients in 140 countries access to AI tools built on AWS infrastructure - tools designed to cut through the growing complexity of managing a global workforce.

"ADP is setting the standard for how AI can transform human capital management at global scale," said Scott Liska, vice president at AWS. The partnership builds on years of collaboration, including ADP's recent work with the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center, a team that helps companies design and launch generative and agentic AI solutions.

What the partnership delivers

The collaboration rests on four pillars. First, ADP is moving thousands of core applications - including tax and payroll systems - to AWS using agentic services that accelerate what was previously manual migration work. Second, ADP Assist agents, built on Amazon Bedrock, now function as purpose-built AI agents that can think, plan, and act under human oversight for employees, managers, and HR practitioners.

Third, the ADP Lyric HCM platform uses AWS to unify global HR, payroll, talent, and workforce management. ADP implemented a generative AI-driven client onboarding process that cut certain critical steps by more than 50%. Fourth, a Global Data Platform on AWS structures the industry's largest workforce dataset - spanning 42 million wage earners and informed by 77 years of payroll and HR data - into an intelligence foundation that powers AI features across ADP's solutions.

Why ADP chose AWS

Sreeni Kutam, president of global product and innovation at ADP, framed the partnership around trust and speed. "AI is transforming how work gets done, but it also increases the complexity of managing a global workforce," Kutam said. "Through our partnership with AWS, we're delivering faster, more intelligent innovation that helps our clients make high-stakes workforce decisions with greater confidence."

The cloud foundation lets ADP deploy new AI capabilities faster while maintaining enterprise-grade security and compliance across geographies. For organizations managing multi-country payroll, tax compliance, and talent workflows, that infrastructure matters. ADP Assist agents can identify payroll anomalies, generate instant reports, and automate processes that previously required hours of manual review.

AI agents that act, not just answer

The ADP Assist agents represent a shift from chatbots that answer questions to agents that execute tasks. Built with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, these agents operate within ADP's existing solutions. A payroll practitioner can ask an agent to find anomalies across a pay run; an HR manager can request a headcount report filtered by region and tenure. The agents plan the steps, pull the data, and present results - all with human sign-off required before any action finalizes.

This approach reflects a broader trend in enterprise AI: domain-specific agents that understand the rules, regulations, and workflows of a particular function. For management professionals, the practical implication is less time spent on administrative reconciliation and more time on decisions that require judgment.

Why this matters for managers

For managers and HR leaders, the partnership signals that AI in HCM is moving from experimental to operational. ADP's client base spans small businesses to global enterprises, so the tools rolling out on AWS will reach teams of every size. The 50% reduction in onboarding steps for Lyric HCM is a concrete metric - not a promise - and it hints at the efficiency gains possible when AI is embedded in the platform rather than bolted on.

Managers evaluating their organization's HCM stack should watch how ADP Assist agents handle compliance-heavy tasks across jurisdictions. If the agents prove reliable at catching payroll errors and surfacing compliance risks, the time savings could reshape how HR teams allocate headcount. The AI for Human Resources landscape is shifting quickly, and partnerships like this one determine which capabilities reach the desk of the average HR practitioner. For CHROs and senior HR leaders building their AI strategy, the AI Learning Path for CHROs offers a structured way to evaluate what's real versus what's still on the roadmap.
