AI accelerates code but shifts the real bottleneck to product decision-making
AI has compressed software development from weeks to days, but faster code doesn't mean better products. The real bottleneck is now decision-making-building the wrong thing quickly is still waste.

AI's Speed Is Creating a New Problem for Product Teams
AI has compressed software development timelines from weeks to days. But this acceleration is forcing product leaders to rethink how they make decisions, not how they write code.
Before AI, implementation was the bottleneck. Developers had time to collaborate with users, test assumptions, and weigh design trade-offs before shipping. That buffer is gone.
The cognitive load on engineering teams hasn't increased because they need to remember more code. It has increased because they must make high-stakes decisions at speeds they're not prepared for. A wrong call at the steering wheel now alters the entire product direction.
The Prototype Illusion
AI can generate a working proof-of-concept in hours. Business leaders often interpret this as proof that building enterprise software is equally fast.
It isn't. Fast demos ignore the requirements that separate prototypes from production: graceful failure handling, network stability, accessibility compliance, security hardening. Moving from demo to shipped product remains complex work.
The assumption that AI removes this complexity is unrealistic.
Speed Without Direction Is Waste
Building the wrong thing at high frequency is still building the wrong thing. AI shifted the bottleneck from "how we build" back to "what we build."
Product leaders must spend equal time-if not more-on design iteration and user research as engineering teams spend on code generation. The question that matters is no longer "Can we build it fast?" but "Are we building the right thing?"
AI Needs to Move Beyond Code
Most organizations deploy AI only in the coding phase. That creates an imbalance. Quality assurance, product design, and UX teams fall behind when engineering moves this fast.
Apply AI across the entire development process-design, testing, user experience-so all teams can operate at the same pace. Otherwise, speed in one area creates bottlenecks everywhere else.
