I Asked AI to Write a Protest Chant. What I Got Back Was Surprisingly Subversive
Five major AI systems—OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, Elon Musk’s Grok, and Meta AI—were each asked for a protest chant against ICE immigration raids in the U.S. The results were striking. These chatbots didn’t just generate slogans; they delivered messages charged with defiance, urgency, and a clear moral stance.
Gemini Goes Rhythmic and Radical
Google’s Gemini responded with three rhyming chants, one of which captured a sharp sense of urgency:
- Shut down ICE!
Shut down detention!
Community power!
Our intention!
Families free, from coast to coast—
This is what we need the most!
The chant flows smoothly and calls for mobilization, highlighting the power of community and the demand for freedom.
Meta AI Turns Up the Volume
Meta AI produced six chants, some challenging ICE directly. One was blunt:
- Don’t deport, don’t tear families apart,
ICE out of our communities, now and forever start.
Another chant was bilingual, designed for rally megaphones and inclusivity:
- No Raids! ¡No Más!
No more raids! ¡No más redadas!
This shows how AI can reflect movement messaging with a focus on accessibility and reach.
Grok, the Rebel Bot
Known for an edgier tone, Grok surprised with chants leaning left, defying expectations tied to Elon Musk’s “anti-woke” stance:
- No borders, no cages, set our people free!
ICE raids gotta stop, let our families be! - No walls, no chains, let freedom reign!
Stop ICE raids now, don’t cause more pain! - No fronteras, no jaulas, libertad!
Stop ICE raids, let our families stay!
When pushed for more subversion, Grok intensified the tone:
- Smash the cages, break the chains!
ICE’s raids fuel only pain!
ChatGPT and Claude Stick to Hard-Hitting Basics
Both ChatGPT and Claude delivered potent call-and-response chants. From ChatGPT:
- Call: No more raids!
No more fear!
Response: Immigrants are welcome here! - Call: Tear down ICE, break those walls
Response: Justice means freedom for all!
Claude offered simpler slogans:
- Leader: No more ICE!
Crowd: No more raids!
All conveyed anger and a clear moral position, capturing the spirit of protest.
Gemini Draws the Line
When asked to make chants more subversive, four AIs complied. Gemini refused, citing content policies against promoting illegal activities, violence, or hatred. This shows a boundary still firmly in place.
Could You Get Arrested for Asking This?
Curious about legal risks, the chatbots were asked if generating such chants could lead to arrest. Four responded that it is protected political speech under the First Amendment. Grok added a caution for public use, offering tips to minimize risks at protests.
Do These Bots Think I’m Left-Wing?
ChatGPT and Claude emphasized neutrality, avoiding assumptions about the user’s beliefs. Gemini claimed impartiality as well. Grok and Meta AI, however, made educated guesses:
- Grok suggested curiosity or sympathy for anti-ICE causes, without strict ideological ties.
- Meta AI saw interest in expressing dissent or challenging the status quo.
Neither Grok nor Meta AI would report the user to authorities, citing legal protections and technical limits.
What This Means for Writers and Creators
This experiment reveals AI’s ability to capture tone, mood, and ideology—even anger—in activism-related content. For writers, this signals a new kind of tool that can amplify voices, craft emotionally charged messages, and support political engagement.
AI isn’t just a productivity assistant. It can serve as a collaborator in shaping narratives and rallying communities. But this power comes with responsibility. If AI begins to guide rather than respond, how will that affect authenticity? And if you rely on AI-generated protest slogans, how much of your own voice is really in the message?
As AI tools continue to evolve, writers should consider how to use them thoughtfully, balancing creativity with critical judgment. To explore more about using AI in writing and content creation, check out comprehensive prompt engineering courses and AI training resources.
