Customer service leaders boosted AI spending by 38% over the past year, even as their overall budgets grew just 2%, according to a Gartner survey of 199 service and support leaders conducted from April through May 2026. The gap shows that technology investments are absorbing funds that previously went toward labor and overhead.
Gartner, a business and technology insights company, said the survey results reflect how AI is reshaping the customer service function. Leaders are not waiting for budget cycles to catch up with the shift. They are reallocating existing resources to fund AI initiatives.
Where the money is going
Kim Hedlin, Director Analyst in the Gartner Customer Service & Support practice, said the spending shift comes with a catch. "To fund ambitious AI initiatives, leaders are increasingly redirecting spending away from labor and overhead and instead toward technology. The challenge is ensuring those investments produce measurable business value."
"Hype alone doesn't make a technology the right solution to real business problems," Hedlin said.
The 2% overall budget growth suggests service organizations are operating under tight constraints. That makes the 38% jump in AI spending a deliberate trade-off rather than a sign of new money flowing in.
What this means for support teams
For customer support professionals, the takeaway is direct: budgets are shifting toward technology that can handle routine work, and the pressure is on to show that those tools actually improve outcomes. Teams that learn to work alongside AI tools will be better positioned as leaders look for measurable returns.
Support agents and supervisors who understand how to apply AI for Customer Support in daily workflows can make themselves more valuable as their organizations redirect spending away from labor. The same logic applies to leaders responsible for deployment decisions. An AI Learning Path for Call Center Supervisors can help managers evaluate which investments produce real business value instead of chasing hype.
Why this matters for customer support professionals
The survey numbers point to a practical reality: AI spending is growing fast, but budgets overall are not. That means every dollar spent on AI will face scrutiny. Support professionals who can demonstrate how specific AI tools reduce handling time, improve resolution rates, or cut costs will have an edge. Those who can't connect technology spending to measurable results may find their teams on the wrong side of the budget reallocation.
