A new AI-powered tool called VallamAI is being piloted across seven districts in Tamil Nadu, covering 2,100 government school teachers, 150 instructional coaches, and roughly 60,000 students. Developed by the Madhi Foundation, the platform aims to help teachers create lesson plans tailored to individual student needs using classroom data, addressing a persistent challenge in foundational learning where children in the same class often operate at vastly different levels.

The tool focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy for Classes 1 through 5. Teachers can assess students through speech, multiple-choice questions, or by manually entering scores. VallamAI then groups students by learning level and generates individual insights into specific gaps, helping teachers decide on suitable remedial measures. The system also reduces time spent on evaluation and data analysis, freeing teachers to focus more on instruction.

How the AI chatbot supports classroom decisions

VallamAI includes an AI chatbot that teachers and instructional coaches can access through text or voice. The chatbot draws on teacher handbooks and foundational learning frameworks to offer guidance during classroom teaching or coaching sessions. Rather than replacing teacher judgment, it functions as an on-demand reference for deciding the next course of action.
