Alibaba's Qwen AI model joins Apple Intelligence for China

Apple is integrating Alibaba's Qwen AI model into Apple Intelligence for Chinese users, marking the first time a global hardware maker has chosen a Chinese large language model as its primary system-level AI backbone in China.

Apple will integrate Alibaba's Qwen AI model into Apple Intelligence for Chinese users, the companies announced Saturday. The deal marks the first time a major global consumer hardware maker has selected a Chinese large language model as the primary system-level AI backbone for the Chinese market.

The Qwen-powered features will be available for testing in the latest iOS developer beta starting November 4. A full rollout to Chinese users is scheduled for December with the official iOS 27.3 release. Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones purchased in China, or devices with both location and Apple Account region set to China, will receive the update.

What Qwen brings to Apple's ecosystem

The integration places Qwen's capabilities across several Apple operating system functions. Chinese users will access text and image understanding, plus content generation, through Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence. Users control whether to enable the Qwen integration and what information to share. Alibaba said it will not use user requests or generated responses for model training.

Eddie Wu, CEO of Alibaba Group, said Qwen, drawing on Alibaba's AI expertise, will integrate into Apple's ecosystem and work with Apple to deliver new AI-powered service experiences to Chinese users.

A regulatory milestone for domestic AI

China's cyberspace authority completed the filing of seven on-device generative AI services for smartphones in July, including Apple Intelligence. That regulatory step cleared the path for Apple to bring its AI system to the Chinese market. Apple first introduced Apple Intelligence at its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2024.

Wang Xiaojie, an AI expert at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, said this is "the first time a top global consumer hardware maker has used a Chinese large model as the primary system-level AI backbone in the Chinese market, a significant step in the commercial application of domestic large models."

Why this matters for marketing, PR, and product teams

For professionals in marketing, communications, and product development, the Alibaba-Apple deal signals a shift in how global platforms localize AI features. Rather than adapting a single Western model for all markets, Apple chose a region-specific AI partner. This approach may become a template for other tech companies navigating regulatory and cultural requirements. Teams building AI-powered customer experiences should watch how users respond to having a choice in which AI model powers their device features - and whether that expectation spreads to other regions.
