Apple Announces Siri AI and New Parental Controls at Cook's Final WWDC

Apple unveiled Siri AI, an overhauled version of its voice assistant that can answer questions, provide writing tools, and search devices for information and photos. The company announced the technology Monday at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, marking significant updates to Generative AI and LLM capabilities across its product line.

Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, said Siri AI is "a dramatically more capable and conversational assistant designed to help users find information and get things done throughout the day." Developer testing begins immediately, with a public beta arriving later this year.

The announcement came during Tim Cook's final WWDC as CEO. Cook steps down in September and will be succeeded by John Ternus, the former senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

Siri AI runs on Apple's updated Apple Intelligence framework, which combines on-device processing with cloud-based computation through Private Cloud Compute. The system powers several new capabilities across Apple's operating systems.

Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence will let users edit photos with AI, automatically organize browser tabs, monitor websites for updates, and identify weak passwords. Users can also create custom Safari extensions by describing what they want, and generate photorealistic images in the Image Playground app.

Stricter Parental Controls

Apple announced major updates to parental controls that automatically intervene when inappropriate or violent content appears on child accounts. Parents can now block apps and websites more easily.

Child accounts will be automatically created for users under 13 and available for accounts through age 18. Sumbul Desai, Apple's vice president of Health and Fitness, said the updates help "families thoughtfully establish age-based protections and develop healthy digital habits."

New Operating Systems Coming This Fall

Apple will release iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 this fall. The operating systems center on Siri AI and Apple Intelligence updates, with performance improvements across the board.

Apps will launch 30% faster, photos will load 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers will run 80% faster, according to Apple. Android and Windows users can now join iCloud photo albums. Apple Watch displays will shift from clear to fully tinted based on user preference.

watchOS 27 introduces Workout Buddy, a feature that motivates users to exercise based on their fitness history, tracking pace, distance, and workout duration. Apple Watch users can also tap their index finger and thumb together to select widgets in the Smart Stack.

For AI for IT & Development professionals, Siri AI's developer testing availability and the expanded Apple Intelligence framework offer early access to test new capabilities across enterprise and consumer applications.
