Arctic Wolf's 2026 AI & Cybersecurity Trends Report reveals a sharp disconnect in security operations: 94% of organizations now use LLMs and factor AI into purchasing decisions, yet only 14% have made AI central to their security strategy. Based on a global survey of 1,350 security and IT decision-makers conducted by Sapio Research, the findings show operations teams caught between the demand for faster defenses and a deep reluctance to let AI act on its own.
Just 53% of respondents trust AI to perform narrowly defined actions - such as blocking malicious IP addresses at a firewall - citing fear of false positives triggering incorrect responses. Data privacy concerns lead the list of barriers at 51%, followed by the lack of human intuition (49%) and worries about accountability when AI-generated outcomes prove inaccurate.
Confidence outpaces results
Nearly two-thirds (63%) of organizations experienced a significant cybersecurity incident in the past year. Among those affected, 48% reported productivity losses lasting two weeks or longer. An additional 7% of security leaders said they were unsure whether their organization had experienced a major event at all - a blind spot that complicates incident response planning.
Despite these numbers, 96% of leaders said they remain confident their teams can handle the volume and complexity of modern threats. That confidence sits uneasily alongside the fact that 35% now rank AI itself as their top cybersecurity risk, ahead of ransomware and malware for the second consecutive year - even as ransomware remains the most common incident response case handled by Arctic Wolf.
What operations teams actually want from AI
Respondents reported spending 13 to 15 hours per week on each major security function: reducing false positives, managing tools, and meeting compliance standards. The operational burden helps explain why 85% believe AI will improve their ability to detect new or elusive threats, and 72% said AI is already more capable than humans at identifying threats. The appetite for automation is real, but it runs headlong into the trust problem.

Ransomware and data loss exact a heavy toll
Data loss emerged as the most damaging category of cyber event. 21% of respondents identified inadvertent data exposure or accidental data loss as their most significant incident, while another 8% cited deliberate data exfiltration or theft. In North America, 74% of organizations hit by ransomware ultimately paid - directly or through a third party - the highest rate of any region surveyed.
Agentic AI, often described as the next frontier in cybersecurity, faces slow adoption for reasons that mirror the broader trust gap. Beyond privacy and intuition concerns, respondents pointed to the risk of inaccurate outcomes and unclear accountability as persistent blockers. The report suggests that until AI systems can deliver explainable, auditable decisions, operations teams will keep them on a short leash.
