Article on AI Demand Explodes! Moore Thre...

Chinese GPU designer Moore Threads (688795.SS) reported first-half 2026 results on Aug. 9, with revenue of CNY 1.74 billion (about $257.3 million) up 147.42% year over year on AI demand for full-function GPUs. The net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed to CNY 11.56 million (about $1.7 million) from CNY 271 million (about $40.2 million) a year earlier, a sign that R&D investment is starting to pay off commercially.

What drove the revenue jump

Moore Threads attributed the growth to strong demand for full-function GPUs across the global AI industry. The company also pointed to its KUAE Intelligent Computing Cluster, whose commercialization accelerated during the period. Moore Threads said the product line won high customer recognition and achieved stable supply, making it the main engine of revenue growth.

The basic loss per share was CNY 0.02 (about $0.003). After deducting non-recurring gains and losses, the net loss stood at CNY 151 million (about $22.4 million), narrower than the same period last year. That indicates the profitability of the core business is gradually improving.

Transition from R&D to commercial payoff

Moore Threads is at a turning point. Revenue growth has started to cover operating costs and earlier R&D expenditures, and the loss gap is closing fast. Domestic demand for AI computing capacity in China, combined with the strategic requirement for a self-controllable chip supply chain, has created a rare opening for the company's full-function GPU product line.

Institutional analysts said the KUAE cluster's commercial deployment marks Moore Threads' shift from a pure chip designer to an operator with system-level solution capabilities. That shift, they said, should strengthen product added value and customer stickiness. Moore Threads has not turned a profit yet, but the combination of fast revenue growth and narrowing losses sends a positive signal to the market.

Why this matters for finance professionals

For investors and analysts tracking China's semiconductor sector, Moore Threads' first half is a useful benchmark for domestic GPU adoption. Revenue jumped 147% while the net loss narrowed from CNY 271 million to CNY 11.56 million, a sign that policy tailwinds for domestic AI computing are converting into actual sales. The key question for the second half is whether the loss trend continues - at that pace, the company could approach breakeven sooner than current models suggest.
