BigHand has agreed to acquire UK-based AI-powered legal pricing specialists Ayora, in a deal that brings the startup's pricing intelligence technology into BigHand's legal software portfolio. Terms were not disclosed; the acquisition builds on a strategic partnership between the two companies that began in May.
The initial phase of the deal will see Ayora integrated with BigHand Matter Pricing Cloud, its pricing forecasting software. BigHand will also get immediate access to Ayora's AI technology, including its specialist data enrichment layer. All of Ayora's team will join BigHand.
What Ayora brings
Ayora is an AI-powered financial intelligence platform for law firms. It's part of a growing category of AI for Legal tools that handle the business side of practice. The platform helps legal practices monitor ongoing costs and the pricing of new client business, giving firms a clearer picture of profitability before they commit to fee arrangements.
BigHand CEO Sam Toulson said: "By bringing Ayora into BigHand, we're combining exceptional AI and pricing expertise with trusted technology to help law firms make smarter commercial decisions, improve profitability and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market. The acquisition strengthens BigHand's position in one of the fastest-evolving areas of legal technology, where firms are increasingly investing in pricing intelligence, profitability and AI to strengthen commercial performance."
Leadership and integration
Stefan Ciesla-Grain, CEO and co-founder of Ayora, becomes managing director of AI and data product strategy at BigHand. Gordon McKenzie, Ayora's CTO and co-founder, has been appointed BigHand's senior director of AI and innovation.
Ciesla-Grain said: "By becoming part of a trusted legal technology business with the scale, customer relationships and expertise, we will speed up the deployment of our technology and reach more firms around the world."
BigHand's acquisition streak
The deal continues a run of purchases by BigHand. In 2020 it acquired UK resource management company Mason & Cook. In 2022 it bought San Francisco-based cost analytics platform Digitory Legal and US financial analytics provider Iridium Technology.
Stephen Allen, chief scout at UK legaltech consultancy Trampelpfad, said the deal makes sense for BigHand as it positions itself around the business of law rather than the practice of law. He said pricing, alongside the resourcing business BigHand bought a few years ago, forms a direct value chain benefit.
Why this matters for legal professionals
The legaltech market is consolidating. Last month, Legora completed its fifth purchase this year with a deal for UK AI litigation intelligence start-up Wexler, while Harvey acquired New York-based Benchmark.
For legal professionals, the takeaway is practical: pricing decisions are increasingly data-driven. Tools like Ayora's are designed to give firms a clearer view of matter costs and profitability before they commit to a fee. This is also a growing application of AI for Finance in professional services. Lawyers who understand how these systems work will be better positioned to negotiate rates, manage budgets, and explain pricing decisions to clients.
