Demis Hassabis said Wednesday he is stepping down as head of Google DeepMind, handing day-to-day control to chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu. The move reshapes leadership at one of the world's most influential AI labs at a moment when Google is losing senior researchers to competitors and defending its position in frontier model development.
Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010, will become chairman of the unit and take the newly created role of chief scientist at Alphabet, Google's parent company. He will focus on artificial general intelligence strategy and scientific applications while relinquishing operational responsibilities.
"I've decided that now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM, so that I have the time and space to focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come to the best of my ability," Hassabis said Wednesday.
A new leader for DeepMind
Kavukcuoglu, who also serves as Alphabet's chief AI architect, will lead Google DeepMind with the title of senior vice-president. He will oversee day-to-day operations, including development of the company's frontier AI models and the Gemini ecosystem.
Hassabis said he had been working toward AGI and believed it was "close at hand." He will also remain chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery company spun out of DeepMind.
High-profile exits continue
The leadership change coincides with the departure of Jeff Dean, Google's longtime chief scientist, who is leaving after 27 years to launch AI startup Discovery Loop. Google plans to back the company financially.
Dean's exit adds to a series of high-profile departures from Google's AI operations. Researcher Noam Shazeer left for OpenAI, and Nobel laureate John Jumper departed for Anthropic. Alphabet shares edged about 1% lower Thursday afternoon following the news.
