New York Life has appointed Zhen Zhao as its new chief AI officer, placing him in charge of the company's artificial intelligence strategy, platforms, and execution. The appointment reflects a broader industry shift as insurers move AI from isolated projects to enterprise-wide systems that require dedicated leadership and governance. Zhao will oversee the development and deployment of advanced AI and data science capabilities, including agentic AI and machine learning. He'll report within the company's technology organization and help guide responsible AI adoption to improve operational efficiency while supporting New York Life's agents, advisors, and clients. Deepa Soni, executive vice president and chief information officer at New York Life, said the appointment is central to the company's AI plans. "AI presents new opportunities to deliver more personalized experiences and greater value for the clients, agents and advisors who rely on New York Life," Soni said. "Zhen's leadership will be essential as we continue to apply AI responsibly and thoughtfully - enhancing human connection, improving how we work and helping our agents and advisors better serve clients for the long term."

Track record across financial services

Zhao joins New York Life from Chubb, where he served as senior vice president overseeing AI and data science. He led global teams responsible for AI platform development, governance, machine learning operations, and large language model deployment, helping advance the insurer's enterprise AI capabilities. Earlier in his career, Zhao held leadership positions at Barclays and Comcast, overseeing AI engineering, machine learning initiatives, and enterprise data platforms. He began his career as a software engineer at the People's Bank of China. Beyond his corporate work, Zhao holds multiple patents and serves as an adjunct associate professor at Temple University. He earned a doctorate and master's degree in computer engineering from Drexel University and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University.

Industry context

The appointment comes as insurers expand AI use across customer service, operations, and advisory workflows. Many are creating dedicated executive roles to oversee AI strategy, governance, and implementation. The focus is shifting from individual projects to enterprise-wide platforms that can support innovation while meeting regulatory and risk management requirements. For executives mapping their own AI strategy, the move signals that dedicated AI leadership is becoming a standard function in financial services. Training resources such as AI for Executives & Strategy and AI for Insurance can help leaders understand how these roles and platforms are taking shape across the industry. Founded in 1845 and headquartered in New York City, New York Life is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States. The Fortune 100 insurer provides life insurance, retirement income products, investments, and long-term care insurance through its family of companies.

Why this matters for executives and strategy

The appointment shows that AI oversight is becoming a distinct executive function, not a side responsibility. For executives, the takeaway is that enterprise AI success depends on clear accountability spanning technology, governance, and business outcomes. Companies that create dedicated AI leadership positions, as New York Life has done, are treating AI as a core operational capability rather than a series of experiments.
