Bangladesh will add artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and cybersecurity to its national curriculum for grades six through ten starting next academic year. The reforms, announced by Education Adviser Mahdi Amin at the Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026, also make technical education compulsory for all secondary students - a structural shift designed to align schooling with a technology-driven job market.

Speaking at a plenary session in Dhaka on 12 September, Mahdi said the government is "giving the highest priority to STEM education to keep pace with the rapidly changing, technology-driven global landscape." The changes reach both primary and tertiary levels, with new subjects and skill requirements introduced at multiple grade bands simultaneously.

What's changing in the classroom

The curriculum overhaul introduces two new subjects - Sports and Culture - in fourth grade at the primary level. In sixth grade, a subject called "Learning with Happiness" will help students build interpersonal and transferable skills. At the secondary level, technical education becomes institutionally integrated with mainstream schooling. Currently optional, it will be compulsory for all students from grades six to ten, with completion requirements phasing in across schools nationwide.

"The government's objective is to integrate technical education with mainstream education, without treating it as a 'taboo', as in developed countries," Mahdi said.

Higher education and workforce alignment

The reforms extend beyond secondary school. Mahdi confirmed that work is underway to embed technical and vocational education into the curricula of roughly 2,500 institutions affiliated with the National University. The Prime Minister has directed that STEM education receive equal priority at the tertiary level, not just in secondary and higher secondary settings.

Mahdi also addressed talent retention. The government wants to prevent brain drain and turn it into "brain circulation," he said, by building a stronger industry-academia ecosystem. Plans include using endowment and CSR funds, drawing on the experience of Bangladeshi alumni, and creating special fellowships that bring Bangladeshi experts working abroad into curriculum and industrial development.
