Cars.com Launches AI Video Tool That Generates Dealer Inventory Ads Automatically

Cars.com rolled out a new AI video advertising system that automatically creates vehicle-specific ads from dealer inventory. The tool generates videos from existing photos and vehicle data, then targets shoppers actively searching for similar cars on social platforms.

Early results from the March launch show measurable sales impact. In a 30-day campaign, dealers using the system saw a 35% increase in website visitors, a 45% increase in foot traffic, and a 47% increase in influenced vehicle sales compared to the prior period.

How the System Works

The technology plugs directly into a dealer's existing Cars.com inventory feed. When a vehicle is added, the AI combines its photos into 3D renderings and pulls in pricing, mileage, and feature data to create a finished video in minutes.

Cars.com generates videos in the formats needed for TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The company uses its own first-party shopper behavior data to target ads to buyers already searching for similar vehicles. When a car sells and is removed from inventory, the ad stops running automatically.

Each video is built within manufacturer-compliant brand templates designed by Cars.com, ensuring both legal compliance and visual consistency across campaigns.

The Competitive Angle

Cars.com claims it's the only company in automotive advertising combining three elements: AI-generated vehicle-specific videos, real-time demand signals from shoppers, and attribution that connects ad exposure directly to lot visits and sales.

Traditional automotive video advertising typically runs at the brand or incentive level-generic creative meant for broad audiences. This approach targets individual vehicles to buyers who have already shown purchase intent.

Dealer Adoption

In the first 30 days, Cars.com served nearly 10,000 unique video assets to active shoppers. Heiser Automotive, an early adopter, said the in-market video approach proved its value through their own sales tracking.

"We know that our videos are getting to shoppers who are lower-funnel and ready to buy," said Dawn Reidel, director of marketing at Heiser Automotive.

Getting started requires no new production workflow. Dealers connect their existing Cars.com listings, and the system handles video creation and distribution automatically.

For sales professionals, this represents a shift in how inventory moves. Rather than waiting for shoppers to find vehicles through search or browsing, the system pushes specific cars to buyers already in-market-reducing the sales cycle and improving conversion odds.
