Claude customer reports a $17.6K bill despite unused Azure credits
A startup got a $17,600 bill because their Azure credits didn’t cover Anthropic’s Claude when accessed through a specific marketplace path.

Vegalabs reported receiving a $17,600 bill for Claude usage after assuming their Microsoft Azure startup credits would cover the costs. The charges were not offset because the credits excluded Anthropic Marketplace models when accessed through Azure Foundry. The routing path through Foundry triggered billing that fell outside the scope of the credit program.
The incident highlights a concrete risk for teams scaling third-party models through cloud marketplaces. Credit eligibility terms, billing boundaries between marketplace products, and automated budget alert settings each need direct verification before deployment. An assumption that all consumption under a cloud provider umbrella is covered can lead to unplanned charges.
