CMA CGM and NYK Deploy AI Across Shipping Operations
CMA CGM and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) are rolling out major artificial intelligence initiatives across their shipping and logistics operations, marking the latest push by maritime carriers to integrate AI into vessel management, route planning and corporate functions.
CMA CGM will launch MAIA, Powered by Mistral, on June 1 as an internal AI platform for its 80,000 employees across the group's shipping, logistics and media divisions. The French carrier co-developed the platform with Mistral AI under a five-year partnership signed last year, with around 20 Mistral engineers embedded in CMA CGM teams.
The carrier has already deployed more than 55 AI projects with over 200 identified use cases across operations. These include vessel routing optimization, energy consumption tracking, arrival time prediction, automated booking systems and AI-powered customer service tools that handle millions of requests annually.
CMA CGM is also using Microsoft Copilot and MAIA internally to automate administrative tasks, process documents and support operational decisions.
NYK launched a separate initiative called SAIL with AI Compass designed to build AI capability across the organization without significantly expanding headcount. The program includes NYK AI College, a training platform covering AI literacy and business applications.
NYK plans to establish internal knowledge-sharing networks, encourage employees to develop operational AI use cases and introduce incentive systems for AI-driven innovation. The initiative is part of NYK's medium-term management strategy to improve operational efficiency and support sustainable growth.
Both carriers are addressing the same challenge: how to embed AI across operations while building workforce capability. Maritime companies face pressure to optimize fuel consumption, improve scheduling accuracy and reduce administrative overhead as freight markets remain competitive.
AI for Executives & Strategy resources can help leadership teams evaluate similar deployment approaches. AI for Operations training is also relevant for teams managing vessel and logistics optimization.
