Dark Matter Promotes CTO Rao to CEO, Cuts 5% of Workforce
Dark Matter Technologies promoted Vikas Rao from chief technology officer to CEO on Thursday, replacing Sean Dugan. The Florida-based lending software company also announced layoffs affecting roughly 50 employees out of its workforce of just over 1,000.
Rao said the reduction reflects how work is changing inside Dark Matter itself. The company uses AI extensively across its operations-94% adoption rate-to write code and test software. That shift means fewer people doing the work and more reviewing what AI produces.
"The reductions were to kind of mirror the efficiencies we have gained just from an operational perspective as an organization," Rao said in an interview one day into his new role.
From Technology to Market
As CTO, Rao drove Dark Matter's AI and product strategy. As CEO, he said his focus shifts to getting those products into customers' hands and lowering barriers for new ones to adopt the platform.
Dark Matter's main products are Empower, a loan origination platform, and Aiva, an AI system for document recognition and income analysis. Rao said customers see the strongest returns when using both products together with the company's point-of-sale platform as one integrated suite.
The company plans to embed AI agents into all its products throughout this year and next. Rao said this direction, revealed at Dark Matter's Horizon customer conference, received strong reception.
Customer ROI as the North Star
Rao framed Dark Matter's strategy around customer return on investment rather than growth targets. When lenders use Aiva alongside Empower, loan origination becomes faster and cheaper while borrowers experience quicker closings, he said.
"The focus for us is to innovate and help our customers adopt it," Rao said. "It's very much customer first in everything we do, and everything else is a byproduct of that."
Dugan, the outgoing CEO, has left Dark Matter entirely.
Rao's appointment comes as lending technology companies face pressure to prove their AI investments deliver measurable business results. AI for Executives & Strategy leaders increasingly need to understand how to translate technology investments into commercial performance-exactly the mandate Rao outlined for his new role. For those managing organizational change around automation, AI Agents & Automation provides practical frameworks for restructuring teams and workflows.
