De Anza College Launches Associate Degree in Applied AI

De Anza College in Silicon Valley will offer an associate degree in applied artificial intelligence starting this fall, along with six new AI-focused credentials and more than 20 additional degree and certificate programs.

The college says it will be the first in Silicon Valley to offer this particular associate degree. The program targets both students entering the workforce and professionals already working who want to build AI skills.

Credential Options

Students can start with a foundational certificate covering basic AI concepts and methodologies. Those already employed can earn a similar credential through a not-for-credit program called "Applying AI at Work."

For professionals seeking deeper knowledge, the AI in Business certificate teaches practical skills with generative AI tools used in marketing, accounting, human resources, and analytics.

The curriculum emphasizes responsible AI development and ethical practice. "We believe that we need to actively provide our students with the knowledge and training to make informed choices about engaging with AI," said Ram Subramaniam, De Anza's vice president of instruction.

Other New Programs

De Anza is also launching two new associate degrees in automotive service and repair, and engineering with an electrical engineering track for students planning to transfer to four-year programs.

Five new mathematics certificates will cover applied mathematics, pure mathematics, statistics, mathematics for business and social sciences, and elementary mathematics education.

Additional programs launching this fall include music, child and adolescent development, Mandarin translation and interpretation, English as a Second Language oral communication, animated film, professional photography, journalism, nonprofit management, and community impact.

Two of the associate degrees-in music and child and adolescent development-guarantee admission to California State University for graduates.
