DoorDash launched a text-to-order AI agent on Wednesday that integrates with Apple Messages, allowing users to place food orders through simple text prompts. The move targets the friction of traditional app navigation, positioning the delivery giant to compete more directly with Uber Eats and Grubhub by meeting customers where they already communicate.
How the agent works
The tool interprets natural language commands such as "order my usual," which the system recognizes as the user's typical Friday night purchase. Users can also ask for specific dishes or local recommendations. The agent searches nearby restaurants, builds a cart based on the request, and sends back photos of the suggested food items via text.
Group orders present a different challenge. DoorDash says its agent can process mixed dietary preferences and varying quantities within a single transaction, eliminating the need for multiple separate orders or manual coordination.
Strategic context and drone testing
This launch aligns with a broader industry shift toward personal AI agents that execute tasks without requiring users to open specific apps or visit websites. By embedding ordering into a default communication channel, DoorDash reduces the steps between intent and completion.
In addition to the messaging feature, DoorDash announced it will begin testing delivery drones with select restaurants in Northern California. The company has opened a waitlist for U.S. users interested in trying the new AI agent.
Why this matters for customer support, hospitality, and operations
For professionals in customer support and hospitality, this shift changes the nature of incoming inquiries. When orders are placed via unstructured text, support teams will face more edge cases where the AI misunderstood a colloquialism or dietary need. Operations managers in food service will need to prepare for orders that arrive without the standard app metadata, potentially requiring new workflows for verifying group orders and special requests.
Those in sales and operations roles should monitor how conversational interfaces affect order accuracy and ticket volume. As more consumers adopt AI Agent Courses and similar tools, support teams may see a spike in issues related to AI-generated recommendations versus actual menu availability.
