EHR Vendors Roll Out AI Tools for Clinical Care and Revenue Operations
Electronic health record vendors introduced a wave of AI-driven features this month aimed at reducing administrative work and improving clinical decision-making. The updates span clinical decision support, revenue cycle automation, and specialized platforms for home health and women's health.
Clinical Decision Support Gets Patient Context
Elsevier acquired Wellsheet, a company that mines EHR data to surface patient-specific clinical guidance. The acquisition integrates Wellsheet's technology into Elsevier's ClinicalKey AI platform, which pulls evidence from over 1,000 medical journals and organizations.
Clinicians will see relevant patient context without leaving their workflow or conducting additional searches. Wellsheet operates across 139 U.S. hospitals, while ClinicalKey serves more than 300 hospitals globally.
Revenue Cycle Automation Targets Specific Bottlenecks
athenahealth released over 80 AI features designed to address insurance errors, coding mistakes, prior authorization delays, and claim denials. Coding automation, currently in beta, uses AI to properly code claims and flag payer rule changes as they occur.
Early results show a 30% increase in recovered payments. Other tools include voice AI that handles prior authorization calls 96% faster than human agents, and insurance verification that has cut denials by nearly 16%.
AdvancedMD is refocusing its cloud-based EHR under new leadership to address revenue cycle friction in independent practices. The vendor appointed a former SimplePractice executive to lead the effort.
Specialized Platforms for Home Health and Women's Health
Enzo Health launched an AI-native EHR for home health agencies. The platform automates workflows from referral through billing in a single system, eliminating the need for separate tools for intake, documentation, scheduling, and compliance.
Elation Health acquired Aster, an EHR startup focused on women's health, to add voice AI-driven front-office automation. Elation previously embedded Anthropic's Claude model to summarize patient data for providers.
Device Data Integration and Screening Tools
Glooko integrated insulin pump data directly into EHR flowsheets. The device-agnostic software pulls basal schedules, insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios, and other settings automatically, eliminating manual entry of up to 24 data points per patient.
Epic added a firearm safety screening tool from Northwell Health to help providers identify patients at risk of firearm injury and collect data on injured patients.
PointClickCare introduced Billing Advisor for skilled nursing providers. The automation suite identifies billable services and revenue risks before claims submission.
EHR Deployments Expand
Oracle Health's EHR went live across Nova Scotia Health's Central Zone, serving more than half of Nova Scotia's population as part of a 10-year agreement.
These updates reflect a broader shift toward AI for Healthcare that addresses specific operational problems rather than general productivity gains. AI Agents & Automation are handling repetitive tasks-prior authorizations, insurance verification, coding-that have historically consumed staff time without adding clinical value.
