The EU AI Board met on 17 September 2026 under the Irish Presidency of the EU Council to review current priorities for implementing EU AI policy. For the first time, Moldova participated as an observer, marking an expansion of the Board's engagement beyond member state borders.
The Commission briefed members on new frontier AI capabilities and recent AI incidents. Discussions then turned to strengthening Europe's own AI infrastructure, advancing safety measures, driving uptake across key industries, and tightening coordination among member states.
AI Act implementation and transparency rules
The Commission delivered an update on AI Act rollout, including work on recommendations to support AI literacy and measures backing transparency rules that took effect on 2 August. Those measures cover the Code of Practice and related guidelines.
Board members also addressed cooperation on market surveillance and governance structures for pre-market conformity assessment, as required under the AI Act. A proposal to introduce a secondment programme for market surveillance authorities to the European Data Protection Supervisor was discussed, alongside the Board's own governance framework.
Cybersecurity and frontier AI infrastructure
The Board received an update on the Action Plan on Cybersecurity and AI. Key points included the development, evaluation, and testing of cybersecurity infrastructure for frontier AI, along with preparations to strengthen the EU's cyber ecosystem for emerging challenges and opportunities.
Next meeting and the Apply AI Summit
The tenth AI Board meeting is scheduled for 18 November, held on the sidelines of the Apply AI Summit in Brussels on 17 November. The Summit will close the European AI Innovation Month, which opens on 14 October in Dublin at the International AI Summit.
