FBI and CISA warn AI can scale election phishing
U.S. agencies warn that AI can make election-related phishing attacks more believable and widespread, and they recommend stronger security steps like phishing-resistant logins and staff training.

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint warning that artificial intelligence tools can increase the scale and sophistication of election-related phishing campaigns. The agencies stated that AI can accelerate the production of phishing messages and make them more credible, while also enabling the creation of convincing deepfake content targeting campaigns and election officials.
The advisory outlined specific security controls to counter these threats. Recommended measures include implementing phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, using out-of-band communication channels to verify sensitive requests, enforcing least privilege access policies, and conducting regular staff training to recognize evolving tactics.
Election infrastructure operators and political campaigns were urged to adopt these baseline protections to reduce the risk of compromise from AI-enhanced social engineering attempts.
