European AI startup fonio.ai raises $17M to expand beyond voice calls
fonio.ai, an AI customer communication platform, has closed a $17 million seed round led by 20VC at a $140 million valuation. The funding follows a $3 million angel round completed in late 2025, bringing total capital raised to more than $20 million.
The company builds AI agents that handle customer interactions across phone, messaging, and other channels for small and medium-sized businesses. Its platform currently automates more than two million customer calls monthly for clients including Volkswagen, Storebox, and Brita.
What the platform does today
fonio.ai's AI voice agents manage customer support, appointment booking, lead qualification, and outbound campaigns. The company developed its own technology stack for speech recognition, turn detection, emotion recognition, and real-time orchestration.
In less than two years, the startup has grown to serve over 7,500 businesses across several European markets and Brazil. The platform can handle most customer inquiries without human intervention, according to the company.
Expansion plans
The new funding will support fonio.ai's shift from voice-only to omnichannel communications. WhatsApp integration already exists, with email and chatbot capabilities launching in coming months.
The startup is also building additional business tools, including a proprietary calendar system and a CRM platform designed for AI-driven customer interactions.
fonio.ai recently launched operations in the United Kingdom and the United States. It plans to establish offices in New York, Munich, Milan, Paris, London, and Warsaw.
The round included participation from founders and executives at Synthesia, HubSpot, and Revolut, alongside existing investors.
