MagicSchool AI, the education technology company founded by former principal Adeel Khan, has raised nearly $63 million in cumulative funding after Khan endured roughly a hundred investor rejections before securing his first institutional investment. The K12 education AI startup now reports about 8 million registered educators worldwide, with backing from Bain Capital Ventures, Valor Equity Partners, Smash Capital, and GSV Ventures.
Khan's path to that funding was unusual by Silicon Valley standards. He spent years as a teacher in Atlanta Public Schools, then as an assistant principal, and later founded a public high school in Denver before working at the district office. When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, Khan tested it with teachers at the school he founded. A few teachers quickly integrated it into their daily work, and one told him the technology "completely changed the way I teach."
From lesson prep tools to district-wide deployments
Khan founded MagicSchool in 2023 as a way to turn general large-model capabilities into specific teacher tasks: generating grading rubrics, designing differentiated assignments, and creating practice worksheets and reading materials. About three months after launch, roughly 100,000 teachers were using the platform, which offered more than 50 AI tools at the time.
User growth compounded quickly. By the Series A in 2024, the platform had over 2 million registered educators. That figure now stands at approximately 8 million worldwide, according to Khan's interview with Crunchbase.
The product scope has shifted as the user base expanded. Teachers can create managed environments where students use algebra tutoring and writing tools that align to state-level exam grading standards. The company also contracts with large school systems - Denver Public Schools, Broward County Schools in Florida, and Hillsborough County Schools among them - and claims that about one in five American children now attends a school with a MagicSchool partnership.
Investor skepticism despite product traction
MagicSchool's financing path was not a straightforward phenomenon. When the company had close to a million users, there was still no mature business plan or revenue model. Khan said he spent months seeking venture funding, attending nearly a hundred meetings before gaining backing. Investors in his pitch meetings repeatedly raised his lack of tech-industry roots - no Stanford degree, no Google pedigree, no engineering background. Some education-focused investors were cautious, even while startups of similar scale had raised seed funds on paper products and promises.
The trajectory shifted with user growth. Later, MagicSchool raised a $2.4 million seed round led by Range Ventures in 2023, a $15 million Series A led by Bain Capital Ventures in 2024, and a $45 million Series B led by Valor Equity Partners in 2025. Participation in the Series B included Adobe Ventures and Atreides Investments.
By the end of last year, revenue had grown roughly three times year-on-year, Khan said. Its main paying customers now include school districts that want to deploy generative AI with fed privacy rules and local curriculum requirements.
Beyond the model: integration and district infrastructure
MagicSchool now positions itself as a "vertical AI" solution for K12 schools, comparable to Harvey and Legora in the legal sector. Khan said the model itself is no longer the main differentiator; what matters is how the model fits specific professional workflows.
Product updates this year have moved toward deeper integration with existing school systems. The platform supports Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, and Microsoft, letting teachers bring courses and materials into MagicSchool and export generated content back into their usual teaching environment. In June, the platform updated Class Writing Feedback, which lets teachers import assignments across platforms like Canvas, Schoology, and OneDrive.
MagicSchool Labs, launched during the 2025 Series B, targets school administrators. Its first project lets educators use natural language to query and analyze school data - a move that extends the product from lesson planning into management and operational territory.

MagicSchool's rise signals a real shift in how schools are purchasing AI tools. Individual teacher subscriptions are the entry point, but the long-term product and revenue are moving toward district-level procurement: unified management, data privacy compliance, and school-wide deployment.
