G2 finds AI-agent oversight erodes expected productivity gains
AI agent productivity gains are often much lower than expected because fixing and supervising them eats up over a quarter of the time saved.

G2 reports that the expected productivity gains from AI agents are being eroded by the demands of rework and supervision. For many adopters, these oversight activities consume more than a quarter of the anticipated efficiency improvements. The findings indicate that the net benefit of deploying AI agents is often materially lower than initial projections suggested.
The research highlights that common governance practices remain underdeveloped. Central registries for tracking agent activity and live monitoring systems are still uncommon in most organizations. Without these controls, management teams are spending unplanned time and resources correcting agent outputs and overseeing their operations, directly cutting into the return on investment.
G2 advises that executive and operations leaders must explicitly budget for this control work when planning AI agent initiatives. Measuring net productivity, rather than just gross output gains, is necessary to understand the true impact on the business.
