Georgia Tech has released an institutional Academic AI Strategy and a companion Academic AI Playbook, a move that sets a shared direction for how the Institute will integrate artificial intelligence into teaching and learning. Provost Raheem Beyah led the strategy effort, which was shaped by faculty, staff, and students across campus. The documents arrive as universities nationwide face pressure to define their relationship with AI tools that are reshaping professional work.
The strategy does not mandate specific tools or methods. It instead establishes three priorities: AI Fluency for Every Student, AI Innovation Across the Academic Enterprise, and Institutional Leadership and Engagement. The framework explicitly roots decisions about classroom AI use in faculty expertise and disciplinary judgment, preserving academic freedom while acknowledging that graduates will enter industries where AI competence is increasingly expected.
A playbook built from classroom practice
David Joyner, interim vice provost for AI in Education, led development of the Academic AI Playbook. The project began as a campus-wide effort to understand how faculty were already using AI in their courses. That inquiry surfaced enough practical work to fill a first edition with 67 faculty-authored articles representing every College at Georgia Tech, plus 20 lessons drawn from direct classroom experience.
"While higher education has been wrestling with the impact of AI, Georgia Tech faculty have turned hundreds of classes into micro-laboratories to explore how these technologies can support teaching and learning," Joyner said. The playbook captures examples of faculty using AI to support instruction, teaching students how AI is shaping their disciplines, and redesigning assignments for an environment where AI tools are widely available.
Provost Beyah framed the responsibility in practical terms. "Georgia Tech has a responsibility to ensure our students are prepared not only to work with these technologies, but to understand their possibilities, limitations, and impacts," he said. "This strategy provides a road map for helping our community engage with AI in ways that advance learning, discovery, and societal good."
Operationalizing AI fluency
The strategy avoids treating AI as a standalone subject. It positions fluency as a competency woven across disciplines, with faculty determining how AI concepts fit within their fields. The playbook reflects that approach by organizing contributions by discipline rather than prescribing a single pedagogical model. Faculty contributions range from AI's role in engineering design courses to its impact on writing instruction and ethics curricula.
The Institute plans to continue adding resources and guidance as faculty experimentation produces new insights. The playbook functions as a living document rather than a static policy manual, with the provost's office signaling that further examples and engagement opportunities will follow.
