New AI Hub ‘The Brain’ to Open in Ghent in 2027

Construction has begun on “The Brain - AI Tech Hub Ghent” at Ghent University’s Ardoyen campus in Zwijnaarde. Scheduled to open in 2027, this AI hub will host over 600 specialists in AI, photonics, and deep technology, aiming to position Flanders as a leader in global AI innovation.

The project is a collaboration between real estate developer Alides, Flemish investment company PMV, Ghent University, and Tech Lane Ghent Science Park. Their goal is to establish “The Brain” as a European reference point for digital innovation, bringing together companies, start-ups, scale-ups, students, and research institutes to work on AI applications.

Focus on Practical AI Applications

The hub will drive collaboration on AI solutions across various sectors, including medical imaging, industrial automation, smart mobility, and cybersecurity. This focus on practical applications supports the growth of Flemish companies and research efforts.

In a market with rising labor costs, AI is viewed as essential for maintaining competitiveness. By integrating technology, businesses can boost efficiency while preserving quality and employment levels. Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure, talent, innovation, and strategic autonomy.

Supporting Local Innovation and Growth

Concrete projects at “The Brain” will include sensors for air quality and advanced industrial processes. Companies such as Sentea, Indigo Diabetes, and Morrow Optics—key players in Ghent’s innovation ecosystem—demonstrate how photonics and AI intersect in medical technology and smart electronics. The new hub will enable these firms to accelerate their development.

Investment and Infrastructure

The €80 million project will be housed in a 20,000-square-metre tower, backed financially by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Flanders’ Fund for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the city of Ghent, and the province of East Flanders.

For those in real estate and construction, this development represents a significant opportunity in high-tech infrastructure. The scale and specialized focus of the building will require precise planning for advanced technical facilities, flexible workspace design, and sustainable construction practices.
