GIBS opens applications for 2026 media leadership programme with expanded AI curriculum

African Media Leaders Face Strategic Vacuum as AI, Revenue Collapse Converge

Africa's media houses are operating in crisis mode. Revenue models are collapsing, platform dependency is deepening, and generative AI is no longer a future problem-it's a daily operational reality. Yet most newsrooms are responding tactically, experimenting with chatbots while leadership remains strategically unprepared for the disruption ahead.

The Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) is opening applications for its Executive Programme in Media Leadership (EPML) in 2026, specifically designed to address this gap. The four-month programme brings together senior editors, newsroom leaders, product heads, and executives from across Africa to think strategically about their organisations' futures.

The Programme Structure

This is not a traditional academic course. The EPML is a 14-day hybrid experience built for practitioners currently working in the field. Participants attend in-person blocks at GIBS's Johannesburg campus while managing their day jobs.

The inaugural 2025 cohort drew 18 participants from across the continent, including representatives from the African Union, South Africa's National Treasury, major broadcasters like SABC and eNCA, and digital-native outlets.

AI as the New Frontier

The 2026 curriculum expands significantly on generative AI, moving beyond basic tool use. The programme covers four core areas:

  • Prompt and Context Engineering: Developing workflows that produce nuanced editorial output while preserving a publication's unique voice.
  • Tool Analysis and Infrastructure: Evaluating which AI tools deliver genuine newsroom efficiency versus hype.
  • Applied Use Cases for African Newsrooms: Tailoring AI implementation to African cultural, linguistic, and economic realities.
  • Ethical Governance: Building frameworks for transparency and accuracy that strengthen rather than undermine newsroom integrity.

For executives seeking structured guidance on AI strategy, Generative AI and LLM Courses offer complementary technical foundations.

Faculty and Peer Network

The faculty combines GIBS academics with working media practitioners, investors, technologists, and policy experts from across Africa and globally. This mix prevents the programme from becoming theoretical.

The peer network itself has value. African media leaders rarely have structured time to collaborate across competitive boundaries. The EPML creates that space, allowing participants to develop collective responses to shared continental challenges.

Capstone Projects Deliver Real Results

Each participant must complete a capstone project-a practical application of programme learnings to a real challenge within their own organisation. This requirement ensures the R150,000 investment translates directly into organisational value.

Alumni from the 2025 cohort reported immediate business impact. One participant said the programme provided "a well-needed and nuanced space to think deeply" about building resilient media organisations. Another noted that ideas implemented from the course resulted in faster business growth.

For executives navigating strategy amid AI disruption, AI for Executives & Strategy resources complement the media-specific focus of the EPML.
