Global Cooperation Essential for Effective AI Regulation, Says Finance Minister Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for a common global framework to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), warning against isolated regulatory approaches. Speaking at the NEXT Milan Forum in Italy, she highlighted that fragmented national regulations could leave regulators lagging behind technological advancements.
“AI and regulations are going to be an issue for all of us to understand and take forward. It cannot also be that a country decides to handle AI through a certain regulatory framework as though it is independent of all other countries,” Sitharaman said. She compared the situation with cryptocurrency regulations, where coordinated efforts have proven more effective.
Keeping Pace with Technological Developments
As AI technology evolves rapidly, Sitharaman pointed out that regulatory bodies must stay up to date to avoid falling behind. This means regulators need to be equally equipped with the latest technology and insights. Without this, they risk losing oversight and control over AI’s impact on economies and societies.
Trade Agreements and Economic Growth
Sitharaman also welcomed the recent conclusion of free trade agreement negotiations between India and the United Kingdom. She noted that bilateral trade agreements are increasingly critical for expanding export opportunities and diversifying trade portfolios.
“It is necessary that countries in the process of expanding their trade to conclude agreements, and it is through that route with which we can widen the export basket for ourselves,” she said.
Building Skills for the Digital Economy
India’s democratic framework can be an advantage if its people are prepared to leverage emerging opportunities. Sitharaman stressed the importance of skill development, especially in areas like AI, digital economy, and deep technology sectors.
“We are focusing on the digital economy. We are focusing on artificial intelligence; we are focusing on making sure that deep tech also grows faster.”
