GoCardless processes UK's first agentic account-to-account payment for Trussell charity

GoCardless has processed the UK's first agentic account-to-account transaction, completing an AI-driven recurring donation for the anti-poverty charity Trussell. The transaction, conducted under the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) AI Live Testing programme, signals how regulated fintechs are moving AI from pilot projects into live payment flows with real money.

The entire donation was handled through a conversation with an AI agent. A supporter could ask about Trussell's work, then choose a monthly gift of £5, £10, or £15 - each with a description of what the funds provide. Once the donor selected an amount, the AI prompted them to enter bank details and set up a Direct Debit mandate on the spot. No forms, no redirects, no card details.

How the agentic checkout works

The interaction lives entirely inside an AI chat interface. The agent presents donation options, explains their impact, collects bank account information, and creates a Direct Debit instruction - all without handing the payer off to another system. GoCardless built the flow within the FCA's AI Live Testing programme, a scheme designed to support safe and responsible deployment of AI in financial services. The company was selected for the programme earlier this year.

Payer control sits at the centre of the design. Research cited by GoCardless found that 64% of UK consumers are open to AI managing their recurring payments, provided they retain control over limits or final approval. Direct Debit and recurring Pay by Bank mechanisms are built with that constraint in mind, unlike card-based recurring payments which can be harder for consumers to cap or cancel.

Why account-to-account payments matter for agentic commerce

GoCardless frames the transaction as proof that account-to-account rails are the logical infrastructure for AI-driven payments. "We've long argued that account-to-account payments are the natural foundation for agentic commerce, and this groundbreaking transaction turns that core belief into tangible proof," said Hiroki Takeuchi, co-founder and CEO of GoCardless.

The UK government has identified agentic payments as a high priority and a practical proxy for scaling AI safely in other emerging financial services uses. The National Payments Vision calls for account-to-account payments to become a genuine alternative to cards. Globally, Morgan Stanley estimates AI agents could handle up to $385 billion of US e-commerce spending by 2030.

Takeuchi highlighted the regulatory context: "We're extremely proud to have processed the UK's first live agentic bank payment, built under FCA supervision and for a very good cause. The checkout flow is rooted in payer research: 64% of UK consumers are open to AI managing their recurring payments, provided they keep control over limits or final approval. Unlike cards, Direct Debit and Recurring Pay by Bank are specifically built for this."

What the charity saw

Trussell, which supports a community of food banks across the UK, saw the donor experience shift from transaction to conversation. Christianne McKenzie, Head of Individual Giving at Trussell, said: "Every recurring donation helps us reach more people in need. If agentic payments make it simpler for someone to commit to giving, that's a genuine win for everyone as we work to end hunger together. What struck us most was how natural the whole process felt; the giving process is a conversation, not just a form to fill out. That's exactly the kind of experience we want for our donors."

Why this matters for finance, insurance, legal and sales professionals

Agentic payments are not a distant concept. A regulated UK fintech has now run a live transaction where an AI agent handled the full payment journey - including mandate setup - under FCA supervision. For finance and legal teams, the regulatory wrapper matters: this was not a sandbox simulation but a real transaction conducted within a formal testing programme. For insurance and sales leaders, the consumer research is the signal. Nearly two-thirds of UK consumers say they would let AI manage recurring payments if they keep final say. That is a mandate for product design, not a rejection of the technology. The shift from card rails to account-to-account infrastructure also carries direct implications for interchange costs, settlement speed, and recurring revenue models across any business that depends on subscriptions or repeat donations.
