Google Makes AI-Powered Search Mandatory for Logged-In K-12 Users
Google now forces K-12 students signed into school accounts to use AI-powered search, and schools cannot turn it off while keeping regular search.

Google is now requiring signed-in K-12 students to use its AI-powered search in order to access core search functionality. The policy means that schools cannot disable the AI search layer for students who are logged into their Google accounts while still retaining standard search access.
School administrators do retain the ability to opt out of certain other Gemini tools. However, the mandatory AI search setting tightens the connection between a widely used digital service and AI exposure, which is raising concerns among education and government procurement officials about consent requirements and the terms under which essential tools are provided.
