Google Research Introduces Sleep Framework for Continual LLM Learning
Google Research created a method called Sleep that lets AI models learn new things during quiet periods without forgetting old information.

Google Research has introduced a framework called Sleep that alternates active use with offline memory consolidation, allowing large language models to absorb new information without erasing older knowledge. The approach structures learning so that a model can update its understanding during quiet periods, much like biological memory processes.
Continual learning could support longer-lived assistants that retain context and skills over time. However, the quality of what the model remembers and how that memory is governed become central product risks. Teams working on customer support, education, healthcare, or development tools would need to weigh the benefit of persistent adaptation against the challenge of ensuring accurate, appropriate recall.
