IIT Guwahati launches postgraduate programme in robotics and AI

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is opening a Master of Technology programme in robotics and artificial intelligence, with applications closing 15 July 2026. The course begins 10 August 2026 and runs for a minimum of two years, extendable to five.

The programme targets both fresh graduates and working professionals. It combines online classes with on-campus laboratory sessions and final examinations, allowing students to balance study with work commitments.

Admission requirements

Applicants need a four-year or five-year bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or a master's degree, with at least 60 per cent marks. Candidates must also have studied mathematics to Class 12 level.

The institute does not require a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. Selection is based on a written test and interview conducted by IIT Guwahati.

Curriculum and skills

The programme covers machine learning, computer vision, control systems, and automation. Students work on real-world projects with industry experts and access campus facilities for hands-on training.

The curriculum integrates AI for Education principles alongside practical engineering applications. Core topics include Generative AI and LLM concepts relevant to modern intelligent systems.

Flexible exit points

Students can exit at multiple stages with recognised qualifications:

  • Postgraduate certificate after initial coursework
  • Postgraduate diploma after core and elective courses
  • Master of Science (Engineering) after a capstone project
  • Master of Technology degree after completing all requirements

Those who exit early can rejoin after one year to continue their studies.

Career outcomes

Graduates are positioned for roles including robotics engineer, AI and machine learning engineer, automation specialist, data scientist, and researcher. Employers span manufacturing, healthcare, defence, agriculture, and smart infrastructure sectors.
