IMF warns AI correction and cyberattacks could threaten markets
The IMF warns that concentrated AI bets, borrowed money, and reliance on a few tech providers could amplify financial shocks and spread stress.

The International Monetary Fund has identified a cluster of risks where concentrated bets on artificial intelligence, combined with structural funding weaknesses, could amplify financial shocks. The Fund points to the use of borrowed money in AI-related investments and mismatches between the ease of selling assets and the terms of the liabilities funding them as channels that may transmit stress across markets.
A further concern is the growing dependence on a small number of critical third-party technology providers. A cyberattack on one of these providers could create cascading operational disruptions, turning a single incident into a wider financial stability problem.
The IMF advises company boards to test their funding assumptions under severe conditions and to map and manage their exposure to concentrated third-party services. The warning connects investment strategy, operational resilience and liquidity planning as areas requiring direct board-level attention.
