India unveils national strategy to scale AI in medical devices

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda convened a CEO roundtable at India Medical Device 2026 on Saturday and released a government-backed knowledge paper outlining a national strategy for artificial intelligence in medical technology. The roadmap targets the shift from isolated pilot projects to routine clinical deployment, signaling immediate changes to how hospitals will evaluate, fund, and integrate AI-enabled devices.

The AI adoption roadmap

The knowledge paper, developed jointly by Praxis Global Alliance and FICCI, maps five priorities to accelerate AI integration across India's medical device sector. Officials point to existing digital infrastructure like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and the National Medical Devices Policy 2023 as foundational steps. The report identifies fragmented health data, limited clinical validation, shifting regulatory standards, and weak reimbursement pathways as the main barriers to scaling these technologies. AI-driven diagnostics are expected to lead large-scale adoption, extending specialist-level analysis to primary and secondary care facilities.

Evidence and reimbursement requirements

Hospital budget constraints and procurement rules require hard proof that new tools improve patient outcomes before widespread rollout. Earlier in the day, ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl chaired a session on reimbursement mechanisms for emerging therapies. He said medical innovations must ultimately translate into healthcare that is affordable, accessible and sustainable. Bahl warned that bypassing standard evidence requirements would leave regulators and payers unable to verify cost-effectiveness before approving new technologies. Participants requested a transparent health technology assessment framework, realistic pricing models, and stronger clinician training programs to support adoption.

Manufacturing and global expansion

Industry leaders and government officials used the roundtable to discuss growing domestic manufacturing capacity and supporting Indian MedTech firms in international markets. The discussions emphasized coordinated action among regulators, hospitals, payers, manufacturers, and academic institutions to move past experimental deployments. Convergence between digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and local production capabilities will determine whether India can secure a larger share of the global medical device supply chain.
