Indonesia Highlights Ethical AI Use at APEC Education Ministers’ Meeting
Indonesia emphasized the critical importance of ethical artificial intelligence (AI) use during the recent APEC Education Ministers’ Meeting held on Jeju Island, South Korea. The forum brought together education leaders from 21 APEC member economies to discuss how AI can expand access to education and create new learning opportunities for communities.
Indonesia’s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, highlighted that ethical considerations must guide AI development and its application in education. “Understanding the ethical aspects of AI development is also part of Indonesia’s policy,” he stated after the meeting, stressing that AI adoption in education requires caution alongside enthusiasm.
Mu’ti called for clear regulations to ensure AI supports educational progress responsibly. He pointed out the need for balancing digital innovation with digital ethics to foster safe and effective learning environments. “We should focus not just on digital advancements but also emphasize digital ethics,” he added.
Collaborating for Digital Learning Initiatives
In addition to his presentation, Minister Mu’ti engaged with South Korean officials to discuss potential partnerships in educational cooperation. South Korea showed strong interest in supporting Indonesia’s efforts to bring quality education, especially in underdeveloped regions, through digital learning projects.
This year’s meeting, hosted by South Korea for the seventh time, drew around 400 participants, including ministers, academics, and media representatives. The discussions centered on addressing educational inequality and leveraging technology to support sustainable education development.
