JB Financial Group signed a memorandum of understanding with AI company Upstage on Monday, launching a partnership to build large language model-based tools for banking and financial services. The deal moves a group-wide AI transformation effort from strategy to execution, following JB Financial's August executive meeting where leaders identified AI as a top priority.

The collaboration will create a network spanning JB Financial and its major subsidiaries - Jeonbuk Bank, Kwangju Bank, and JB Woori Capital. The companies will use Upstage's proprietary large language model (LLM) technology to develop AI agents customized for banking workflows and other financial services.

The technology behind the deal

Upstage built its own LLM, Solar Pro 4, and is currently contributing to the South Korean government's national AI foundation model project. The company has raised approximately 730 billion won ($528 million) in venture funding. For JB Financial, the partnership provides direct access to a domestic Generative AI and LLM capability without relying on foreign models - a practical consideration for a regulated industry handling sensitive customer data.

Projects beyond model development

The two sides agreed to pursue several joint initiatives. These include developing and testing new AI for Finance applications, exchanging employees between organizations, and running joint training programs to build expertise across both finance and technology. The agreement also covers consortium-based AI projects with local governments, with the stated aim of benefiting local communities.

Chairman Kim Ki-hong framed the partnership as a cultural shift, not just a technology deployment. "Working with Upstage, which has leading AI capabilities in Korea, will help establish an AX-oriented culture across the group and lead to new projects and innovations," Kim said. "This partnership is an important first step toward developing financial AI solutions that can be applied directly to day-to-day operations."

The international dimension

Kim added that JB Financial plans to apply Upstage's AI technology across its overseas networks in Southeast Asia. The goal is to develop new business opportunities in those markets, extending the partnership's reach beyond the group's domestic banking operations.

Why this matters for finance professionals

This deal signals how mid-tier financial groups are approaching AI adoption: through partnerships with specialized domestic LLM providers rather than building models in-house or defaulting to large foreign platforms. For professionals in banking, capital markets, and fintech, the announcement points to three practical developments worth tracking. First, the focus on customized AI agents for specific banking workflows suggests tools that will change how loan officers, relationship managers, and risk analysts work day to day. Second, the employee exchange and joint training components mean cross-functional skills - understanding both financial operations and AI system behavior - will become more valuable. Third, JB Financial's plan to export the technology to Southeast Asian markets indicates that AI-driven financial products developed in Korea may soon compete in regional markets where many finance professionals operate.
