Lloyds Banking Group plans £2bn in cost cuts and reports rise in second-quarter profits

Lloyds Banking Group will cut £2bn in costs over the next four years as it embeds AI and new technology across its operations, chief executive Charlie Nunn announced on Thursday. The strategy, backed by a £13bn investment plan through 2030, aims to boost efficiency, attract new business, and increase shareholder payouts.

The £13bn AI bet

From January, the UK's largest high street lender will channel funds into "pioneering technology" to roll out AI-powered advice for wealth and workplace pensions, deliver personalised offers based on customer behaviour, and support relationship managers with real-time guidance. The plan to offer AI-powered advice for wealth and workplace pensions reflects an industry-wide push into AI for Finance, as banks seek to automate advisory services. Nunn said the bank's current services are "not good enough today, relative to our ambition," adding that the investment will make them "even better, and even simpler."

Jobs and branches remain uncertain

When asked about the workforce impact of the £2bn cost-cutting target, Nunn did not specify potential job losses. He said the bank would review the same levers it has used in the past five years: better technology, office space consolidation, and productivity improvements. "That is going to impact work. It is going to require us to continue to re-skill people and hire new people," he said. Nunn pointed to agentic AI as a new opportunity to provide services the bank has "never been able to provide" while growing more efficiently.

On the branch network, which numbers 550 locations, Nunn said it would remain an important part of the proposition, but the bank will "follow the customers and our customer data." No specific closures were announced.

International push and digital offerings

The strategy also marks a significant shift toward international expansion. Lloyds plans to grow its corporate and institutional bank in the US and Europe, moving away from the domestic retrenchment that followed its 2008 bailout. Nunn's push to use AI and blockchain to slash mortgage approval times to three days illustrates how AI for Executives & Strategy is reshaping core banking operations. The bank will also boost rewards and loan discounts to retain loyal customers.

Lloyds will double down on its car loan division, creating a one-stop-shop app for drivers to buy, insure, and set up charging points for electric vehicles. That move comes as the lender still awaits the outcome of the long-running motor finance commission scandal.

"Still a work in progress"

Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, said the strategy continues to deliver for Lloyds but warned that the push into US and corporate banking is demanding. "Lloyds has the heft in its home market, but a move to a bigger global player is a significant undertaking," he said.

The bank reported a 14% jump in second-quarter profits to £2.3bn, beating expectations. It announced a 1.58p per share dividend and a £1bn share buyback, its first at the half-year. Shares rose 1.7% in response.

Why this matters for Executives and Strategy

Lloyds' £13bn bet on AI and technology signals a clear strategic priority: efficiency gains fund growth and shareholder returns, even as headcount questions linger. For executives, the plan highlights the tension between automation and workforce reskilling, a balance that will define the next phase of digital transformation in financial services. The international expansion, while risky, shows that even a domestic heavyweight sees AI as a lever to compete beyond its home market - a signal that no strategy can ignore the cost and capability advantages of AI adoption.
