Seventy-seven percent of manufacturers expect Physical AI to significantly transform warehouse operations, while none plan to reduce investment, according to Tata Consultancy Services' 2026 Physical AI Readiness Report. The findings signal a decisive shift from isolated automation projects to integrated, enterprise-wide AI ecosystems that interact directly with the physical world-with direct implications for how operations teams plan, staff, and manage facilities.
The report, based on a March-April 2026 survey of 300 C-level executives and vice presidents across North America and the EU, shows Physical AI moving beyond pilots. "Physical AI is taking intelligence beyond screens and directly onto the production floor, where machines can perceive, adapt and act in real time," said Anupam Singhal, President of Manufacturing at TCS. "Manufacturers that successfully scale it will define the next era of manufacturing."
Warehouse operations lead adoption
Warehouse environments are expected to experience the greatest impact, with 77% of respondents anticipating significant or transformational improvements. Assembly and manufacturing operations followed at 75%, and logistics and material movement at 72%. The investment outlook reinforces the trend: none of the surveyed manufacturers plan to reduce spending on Physical AI, and 26% expect to increase it.
Despite the optimism, implementation remains early. The study found 68% of manufacturers are still in experimentation phases or have yet to deploy Physical AI operationally. Executives identified integration with legacy systems, stronger data infrastructure, and workforce skills development as the primary requirements for scaling. As manufacturers shift from isolated pilots to AI for Operations, these enablers become critical for turning physical intelligence into a reliable production asset. Addressing the skills gap in particular will demand focused training, making resources like an AI Learning Path for Operations Managers increasingly relevant for teams preparing to manage intelligent physical systems.
Governance gaps emerge
As Physical AI moves toward business-critical operations, accountability structures are lagging. The report found 44% of manufacturers lack a clearly defined accountability structure for failures involving Physical AI systems. Another 40% said they are not prepared to address emerging regulatory requirements. These numbers point to governance becoming as urgent as technical capability as deployments scale.
Bridging digital and physical on the factory floor
The report builds on a strategic collaboration between TCS and Google Cloud that includes the TCS Physical AI Gemini Experience Center in Troy, Michigan, launched in March 2026. The facility lets manufacturers explore, test, and scale use cases focused on operational safety, quality, and efficiency. "The collaboration between TCS and Google Cloud is bringing Gemini's multimodal reasoning onto the factory floor, enabling robots and systems to operate safely and intelligently in complex industrial environments," said Kevin Ichhpurani, President, Global Partner Ecosystem, Google Cloud.
TCS has also developed a Physical AI Blueprint, a framework combining quadruped and humanoid robotics with AI-powered sensing, edge computing, and cloud orchestration. It is designed to help manufacturers move from pilot projects to enterprise-scale deployment by providing real-time operational intelligence and autonomous decision support.
Why this matters for operations
Physical AI is no longer a siloed experiment in a corner of the plant. It is moving into core operations, from the warehouse to the assembly line. For operations managers, this means leading the integration of systems that perceive, reason, and act in real time-alongside human workers-not just maintaining traditional automation. The report's finding that no company plans to cut investment signals a sustained commitment, and with it a quiet urgency: teams that build the right skills, data infrastructure, and governance frameworks now will be the ones who turn physical intelligence into a lasting competitive advantage.
